Hit or miss. I was on the college scene for into my late 20s, arguably even into my early 30s to a lesser extent, so…. my brain cells have been THROUGH IT, lmao. Also played football til I was 33, so I’ve been smashing my head into people for a little over half my life. That can’t be good😂

My short term memory is hot garbage. I can forget what I’m talking about mid-sentence. Sometimes when I’m driving I can’t remember where I am, and I have to challenge myself to remember where I am, where I’m coming from, and where I’m going. It always comes to me, but it’s wild when it happens. It’s usually on the highway or driving somewhere woodsy where there aren’t any landmarks. I was a bouncer for ten years, so because 10,000 people introduced themselves to me in hopes of becoming my friend so they could skip the line in the future, I now struggle remembering both names AND faces. I’ve introduced myself to way too many people who have been like “we’ve met like five times…”🤦‍♂️

I’m also dummy old now, so that probably doesn’t help😂

BUT…. I’m great at remembering stupid shit. Song lyrics, tv/movie quotes…. I can do a lot that word-for-word, and I don’t really try. Figures I have the best memory for useless shit, lmao.

I have a bad memory, I hate it so much because I will remember seemingly random things in borderline ridiculous detail but then someone could tell me their birthday and no matter what, I'll forget it. Like even if I write it down and make sure it's the first thing I see when I wake up.

And then I get hit with "you only remember the things you want to remember" which feels like a shot in the heart because that's the exact opposite of how it feels like my memory works sometimes.

I thought I had a really good memory but I recently realized my memory is not as good as I thought. I can remember really stupid things but I often forget important details of conversations and tend to get confused after some time. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Pretty good. I'll remember meetings for the week. I'll remember fun facts forever. I won't remember medical appointments that are months away but will remember one is coming up.

I could remember every card played out of three decks but probably couldn't now. That was just a simple visual trick anyway.

In which aspect? Visualization is powerful.

Three decks sounds hard but I would just visualize the suits laid out Ace down. as they were played If say a second nine of hearts was played I would add a second line of of hearts to the visualization. At a point it was easier to visualize the cards that hadn't been played so that was just a flip over visually.

With appointments I just visualize a calendar with it marked in. Just as easy to actually add it to a real calendar but I just like keeping the balls in the air as a juggling metaphor. Same with tasks.

There are memory tricks to help this. I learn't one scheme during a speed reading course. I have long forgotten it but six was six spotlights on a stage. If I needed to pick up 6 bags of sugar I might imagine 6 bags of sugar dancing under spotlights on a stage. It looks impressive if someone can repeat a list of items in the order they were given or repeat the names of 20 people sitting round a table.

Is it useful? About as useful as speed reading. Do you really want to speed read a novel or would you like to dwell in the world of the novel. I think we read novels to dwell in the world :)

All of this is mostly tricks.

Interest is a big key to remembering.

During the American Revolution there were 2 million colonists. Back in England there were only 6 million. That totally flips the perspective of a powerful Britain being done in by ragtag colonists. It was never possible to ship over enough Englishmen to beat the colonists. Especially when France and Spain declared war. I just find that a fascinating fact and I will never forget it.

I think the major key to remembering is to be interested. It is quite possible to create interest in a topic - that is my only power, if I have one :)
