Why does USA not use Celcius like the rest of the world?

The truth is that the US *has* adopted the metric system in many, many areas. For example, all US cars built since the 1980s have been metric. Science uses metric almost exclusively, as does medicine.

The main hold-outs are largely due to building construction. The entire industry - from wood to doors to pipes to windows and much, much more is all based on inches, and moving to metric would be EXTREMELY painful and would then require 100 years or more of having a mixed system - because you will have lots of older houses and buildings that will need SAE/imperial-sized parts for repair, even if everything new was built metric.

in my opinion, they really should have just made the transition, but they didn't, and now we're kind of stuck in limbo - though new technologies, such as PEX piping, is actually metric, so things ARE slowly going metric anyway.

Of all the metric measurements Celcius is the weakest argument as it does not have the gradual increments that one wants with temperature, especially for the temperature of the air. Europeans note this as a failing as well.

@Redstang88 C has 100 degrees between freezing and boiling. F has 180 degrees which is almost twice as many. F is more granular and more informative about how hot or cold it is. Most temperatures that are in the comfortable range for humans will have twice as many degrees which is better. Many Europeans recognize this and said the same.

Yes I’m quite familiar with both, just never heard anyone say anything like that before. -40 to +40 is plenty accurate, most people within 5° is close enough

The q80 degrees i referenced is between 32 and 212, which is 180 degrees and almost double the 100 degrees in C for that.

@Redstang88 5 degrees C is a big difference. I want more accurate information than that. If its 70 here, that is different than 65 and I might want long pants especially as the sun goes down.

Fahrenheit was one of the main scales in use in England at the time the U. S. started and we decided to keep it.
