what is thalassophobia?
i have acrophobia (fear of heights)
and probably have a mild case of agorophobia but i only fear wide open spaces not closed places, crowds or leaving house alone or such things, i don't have sociel anxiety or such things, i just don't like emptiness, it isnot even the wide spaces, it is emptiness and openness i get anxious from.
to key to solve me as a person is stoping thinking me as an human and start thinking me as a predatory animal, instincts driven and all, once you start thinking how an social animal like a lion would act (even though i am a dog person i am personally more feline than canine) you will suprisingly start to see from my point of view, evation of wide open spaces is a sign of that too and like some cats i can climb to high places but i can't go down (i basically got stucked to places sometimes and couldn't go down like trees with large big branchs (i literally spent a camp in the woods on a tree played it as this here is more comfy and i don't wanna sleep on the ground there can be bugs etc shit)

Thalassophobia differs from aquaphobia, the fear of water, in that it centers on bodies of water that seem vast, dark, deep, and dangerous. People are not afraid of the water so much as they are afraid of what lurks beneath its surface.
It also boils down to the fear of swimming without being able to see one's limbs (especially the feet), and the fear of traveling at sea. It can also manifest itself as a fear of deep water, of waves. - 1 y
I know when I was younger a lot of my classmates thought I was scared of the water in the pools. I was more scared about drowning then anything, since I was pretty small and couldn't swim.

@PBandJ_Nerd you werenot able to swim your fearisnot a phobia it has a legimate reason to be afraid of.
- 1 y
In other words: Phobias are extreme fears that can't be explained. But not all fears are phobias. Correct?
- 1 y
@PBandJ_Nerd yes, phobias mostly irrational and uncontrollable, i know that i have nothing to fear at swings but i still can't use them.

I tried to look through a comprehensive list and can't really find one that seems to fit except maybe Dystychiphobia (fear of accidents).
I don't mind accidents where I hurt myself (even an adrenaline junkie and used to getting hurt all the time) but I am very afraid of accidents that hurt others. I prefer to drive very small vehicles, for example, since the risk of harming others if I make a mistake seems less than if I drive a larger vehicle.
I'm also one of the most paranoid engineers on my team. I write more tests for correctness than anyone else since I don't want a bug in my code to end up harming one of our customers. I don't think I could ever work a mission-critical job where a mistake on my part could cost someone else's life. That would keep me up every night worrying about whether I made a mistake.
11 ReplyOh also Autophobia (fear of being alone) and Astrophobia (fear of outer space). I always thought it would be terrifying to be lost in space with no one to talk with (I'm an extreme extrovert). Even the pandemic lockdown almost made me lose my mind even though I had my wife to keep me company at home. I don't think I could manage being alone on a space mission for months or years. I'd probably start to go a bit bonkers even after 6 weeks or so.

Bugo/insectophobia is my biggest one. I've always been scared of bugs & insects all of my life. Why? We have no clue. There's only a few I'm not scared of: grasshoppers, dragonflies, butterflies, rolly pollies, crickets, pray mantis, leaf bugs, lightning bugs, and not sure what else. I also don't like heights, this includes the escalator. I don't like the dark either. I absolutely hate Halloween masks (those things get more realistic every year I swear). And clowns.

Even non venomous pythons have been know to kill from their bite.
My fear is highly rational I would argue
Thalassophobia is rational if Great White Sharks hang out at the beach.
Arachnophobia is rational if you have redbacks or other spiders that can kill you12 ReplyArachnophobia as well, I despise spiders and get a cold sweat when I see one creeping.
Thanatophobia as well, I used to have panic attacks when I was younger and still sometimes get them when deep in thought.
Lastly, like FOMO, but girl related. I fear never being with a girl, never having that connection and ending up a virgin and alone.10 ReplyWhat ever is the snake one is called lol and I have zero reason to be the snakes in my area are all small, not poisonous, and unaggressive. But I see them I move away.

Mylar balloons? No problem. By the way food for thought - the sound of a balloon exploding by over inflation or popping by an object - has the same decibel damage as a 22 gun going off in front of you with no ear protection and can make you go deaf.
