Whatever fits your hand, you feel comfortable operating, and you can fire comfortably. Keep recoil in mind.

I wouldn't go smaller than a.380, .38 or 9mm. But you can choose a revolver or semiautomatic. Revolvers are less expensive, but I like double action semi-autos because they hold more rounds than a revolver and are easier to fire rapidly. But they are more complicated.

The smaller the caliber, the less recoil and more easy to fire. You don't need something super powerful because the faster the bullet, the more chance it will pass through the target and you don't want that. You want the bullet to stop and expend all its energy on the target. So I'd recommend a.38 over a.357, a.40 caliber over a 10mm, or a.44 over a.44 mag any day.

Any firearm requires distance to be useful for self defence. The "best" is a personal preference. The little hole made by a.22 Derringer doesn't make someone less dead than the big hole from a.50 Desert Eagle. Just less messy.

I carry a baton for self defence. I'd rather have a heavy pistol to keep my family safe in a home invasion but not in close quarters.

For most people probably a Glock they're easy to clean they don't get dirty easily and they be submerged or thrown into some pretty hazardous conditions for a long time and still be functional and they're pretty simple and user friendly and chambered in the very common 9mm.

An unloaded one.
So I won't get shot when an attacker wrestles it out of my hands.
Which would not matter much, as I already will have kicked his balls or broke his nose - and he now is kind of busy with what's left of him.

one who has short reloading time. you are not a sharp shooter you won't get a bullseye at your first shot, you need a gun who can shoot multiple times with very little timegap.

It is really a subjective choice. I picked a standard 6 shooter because they are more reliable and I'm new to firearms.

The one you are adept at using. Not being trite. A.357 or.44 won't be much good if you cannot handle it to hit your target.
