I didn't grow-up with them and we got along just fine because - shudder the thought - we were taught how to do arithmetic.
For fancier stuff, we learned how to take square roots by hand and we had printed tables for logarithms and trig functions and we were taught how to interpolate with those tables.
And God gave us slide rules.
I still have my slide rule somewhere... It's a K&E.

Switch back to the abacus, pen and paper, matrices, what have you. We didn't have any calculators working the floor of the casino, say with blackjack for example. You count the cards, then get your result of a win or loss, rake in the losses, pay the wins, and pay blackjack at the ratio that casino set.
You have to get all that done within about 60 seconds or you're failing to keep the play rolling. Same with craps, though with far more players and odds per dealer.

Well then you had better dig up those gradeschool math skills that have been laying dormant in the back of your head.
Most people would be totally lost, seeing as most can barely communicate these days without texting, let alone do math.
I'm not sure if you'd include computer programs in that as well, because if you would most of the world would come to a standstill.
It would actually make people show their work.

There'd be a big boom in abacus sales.
