Why do so many gamers or people who play games think they can do better than the developers?

Like so many people hate on games sometimes for a stupid reason and they complain it’s not this way but you didn’t create the game, you didn’t sweat and work hard to make it so you shut your mouth!
Most games that come out don’t even look that bad, maybe 1-2 bugs and glitches that can be fixed easily but that’s it for the most part. You’re all just having unrealistic expectations!

Just depends on what you mean by think they can do better.

Actually create the product? No. That would be a rare assumption. Although there are certainly scenarios in which even I know how to solve glaring issues with a few lines of code here or there. Generally because you have a non-biased view and can easily identify elements for improvement. Its comparable to how people grow blind reading their own essays but a pair of fresh eyes can easily saw it even with less expertise.

Now where gamers typically feel they know better is when it comes to what a product should be. And that is reasonable. They are the costumers. You could make the most rad car but if no one wants to drive it, it won't matter. It does not mean they know things like level layout, how to make X or Y feel immersive, etc. But the experience from using a product and going "Ah this would be better if.." is very valid. So valid in fact that recent hits like BG3 credit their success largely due to developing the game alongside their audience with a constant feedback loop.

The expectations are rarely about one or two bugs but rather poor design choices. False promises. Predatory practices. Core elements and loops not feeling good. So on.

I think it is very rare that a game that delivered what it promised to an audience that wanted it, fails. And while gamers might not know how to create the product they want they typically do know what they want.

For example I was a little excited for the cult classic return of VtM: Bloodlines. A messy, bug-riddled game that took years of mod support to get functional. A sequel is in the works.

But even in development it is blatantly obvious they are messing it up. Wrong decision after wrong decision. I would not mind some bugs. Cyberpunk was buggy. Its really solid now.

I do mind when I am promised steak and served a salad.

And as a sidenote I think gamers are too forgiving and nice and need to demand way more. Especially from AAA titles.

@Effably I played many games, they’re always good! it’s not easy making perfect games which is impossible! Wdym demand way more? Wtf do you even Want/expect? You people are way too picky! If you don’t like a game just don’t buy it. If you think you know what you want then you create the game then cuz you’re so damn picky!! And entitled!

Is that not the point of developing a game? To have people buy it? Telling people not to buy it is fine, but very counter-intuitive.

@Effably i buy the games i like, i don’t just buy a game i dont like and complain thats its bad! There’s no point! You people really need to grow up! I bought many games but i watch games on YouTube first or look at screenshots and trailers to see if i will like it! I can tell you just buy whatever game that comes out or whatever that is popular.

So my view is very different from yours.

I think the people complaining are more helpful than someone like you who ignores it. Even if they are wrong.

You ignore it and the publishers will never know they missed a sale or why. If I ignore it and go "I did not want someone always commentating on everything I do", and then they see another 5000 people feeling the same? That is valuable feedback. Even if I was whining for no reason.

They could now introduce an on/off option for the commentary. Not particularly difficult. And that might net them 5000 more sales.

You may not like this but complaining is an incredibly important part of a functioning society and system. In fact, society would not function without it.

Is it unrealistic to expect a game to work as it was shown in trailers or like the devs promised it?

The recent games which were heavily criticised were so broken and unfinished, the bugs made them impossible to play.

And its important to show, espacially the publishers, that we won't pay for halffinished crap, so they give their develers more time to work on the games.

Other points of criticism were the amount of money one has to invest to actually play the game, if a game cost more money than a car, its a bit too heavily monetized. Espacially when you read how many employees are fired from big studios, even though their games were great and selling well.

1 or 2 bugs is no problem, unless they are gamebreaking, and i have not seen people complaining about 1 or 2 bugs.

When i think of games that were criticised i am thinking about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, a huge Nintendo Game, that was soo bugged it didn't work.

Or No Mans Sky a game that promised an entire Universe to explore and when it got released it had one Planet with two goofy looking creatures.

Or Cyberpunk 2077, a game that was soo poorly optimized it bare ran on the most high end machines. Even though it was a last gen game, built for PS4. And if you picked up too much stuff, the save game will corrupt deleting all your progress.

Or Diablo Immortal, where endgame gear may cost you 150.000$, per character.

Or one of the black sheeps of kickstarter, where they took millions of dollars from dedicated fans and ran away.

These are exceptions, as there are also many many brilliant games, that are almost perfect, but sadly no one is going online and telling people how perfect a game is. They are just too busy playing the game.

@Astarlessnightsky Pokemon Scarlet and violet weren’t even that bad, it worked, I played both with hours on it. People criticize Pokemon too much even tho it’s a nintendo game and a game originally made for kids. Cyberpunk 2077 works better now well if you have a good set up PC.

You have to judge the games during the time they were critizised. Ofcourse most games run well if you give the company one or two more years to patch them up.

When cyberpunk 2077 was realesed it was a slideshow on PS4 and Xbox One, the consoles the game was designed. Additionally it had bugs and glitches.
and THAT was rightfully critisized and people advised other people to get the PC or PS5, Series X Version instead. And even those had major Problems, like the bug which could corrupt your entire safefile if you hoarded too many items.

It is simply annoying when you pay full price for a game, even preorder it and than you have to wait another year or two until you can actually play it the way you expected the game to be played.

I think lot has to do with the modding community. Modders get together and can sometimes greatly enhance many games, improving them and fixing bugs. Which is great in some cases.

But then you’ve got those watching from the outside seeing modders enhancing games, and suddenly they think modders and amateurs can do better. They don’t realize there is a difference between video game development and modding. Modders already have a finished game in front of them. They’re just tweeking it. Modders aren’t developers. There’s no development process involved.

A person who is none the wiser might not realize the different and may loose faith in the game company.

video have almost hit a wall when it comes to progress in graphics and capabilities. quality used to increase so much more within only a few years. it becomes more difficult to impress players
