It really is not black and white and would depend on the properties. When I bought my first house, I considered a condo, but after factoring in the HOA is, it was cheaper to buy a house. There was a time when the real estate market was skyrocketing, but the condo market was not. Then it was cheaper to buy a condo, it's not apples to apples, you really have to run the numbers. But without a doubt condo is less maintenance.

If you own a house, you will have to maintain it. You will want to save money for future maintenance -- roof, paint, plumbing problems, etc.

You don't want an hoa. Go with the house. Hoa's are a nightmare and if they want money they will find a way to fine you for it

It's not about the money, it's how about they terrorize members (and even non-members) to bow to their will of 1001 silly rules and regulations!
