Was I a coward for getting others involved and not coming to a girl's aid?

I would like to admit this:

Long ago when I was 19, a date got attacked by stray dog. It happened too fast. I saw it all. No it wasn't a pitbull but it was still scary. I alerted people that were already there nearby and called for help.

Then I remained frozen for some moments, just staring and likely going into shock at the scene. Others stepped in and help got fast. It wasn't life threatening injuries but was still taken to get treated.

The topic of gender roles and how we're protectors was brought up recently among friends and this is one time, I kind of feel bad about it. I didn't directly help her more. It happened in my face and I didn't do much. Was I a coward?
