Was I being the 'typical sucker" or just trying to be a Good Samaritan?

A young woman approached me in the parking lot of my grocery store last night. I saw her approaching others when I went in the store. She said she had either lost or had stolen her wallet/money and needed to call Uber to get home. She did not look 'homeless' or destitute, but could have been a addict.

I did not question her but I do not carry cash, and I could have called Uber for her, and got her a ride - - If in fact that is what she needed/wanted- I told her I did not carry cash - true-

Instead, I went back in the store and got 'cash' - 50.00 and gave it to her...

Sucker or Samaritan?

50 is being a very good Samaritan. Did she really need a ride home, or was she just looking for money? You never know.

There's a guy at the door of a supermarket where I go to every week. He's always there, begging for money. You'd think he's homeless and hungry. I would have no problem helping him out. I've done so on similar occasions. But then you see the same guy in the shop, buying candy and cigarettes. I consider myself a good Samaritan, until they're clearly trying to fool me.

but so what... there's also a chance she really needed it and you did a good deed that day

and someone, some day... will need someone exactly like you, willing to help... them

I think that you did the right thing. Not every single person is a scammer. Some people have legit things happen to them and they have to rely on strangers to help them.

Why didn’t you call her an Uber ride. Just same as don’t give money to someone who says they are hungry, take them to a restaurant. Don’t let them buy drugs or alcohol.

@jennz6 In retrospect, Jennz, I should have done just that. Foolish, I know... I took two homeless people: One back into the store, and bought him groceries, and the other woman to a restaurant.

Why does everyone say good intentions are suddenly wasted when you have no way of knowing if the other person is lying? You tried to do a good thing for a stranger, why is it so difficult for others to be content with that?

Sucker. If a stranger expresses a need for some service, then offer to provide the service. If they refuse, then they are scammers.
