Is identifying with a group a form of madness?

identifying as an individual, and also possessing as an individual, are the source of suffering.

as for group madness, one group's sanity is another group's madness, and vice versa. this is the only kind of group it is truly sane to identify with:

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. that those today claiming the biblical Savior refuse to share all things common between them, and to distribute according to need so there is no lack among them, discounts them as part of this sanity

Seriously though, group identity reflects our personal choices and highlights what we want to be associated with (when chosen by us) and when imposed upon us reflects what a certain majority opinions belongs within that given group identity to their perspective or understanding.

When its the latter, meaning a person outside the group determining what belongs in the group, there is a degree of idiocy or stupidity to doing this.

Lastly, to be overly defined by your external group identity suggests an under developed personality. In my personal opinion, because they have a need, want or desire to be seen to be in said group (either from inside, meaning their need or from outside meaning others need to pidgeonhole). I opinion this is indeed a form of madness, because its not about the membership but about mental issues held by the parties involved.
