Owned and paid for. Except I still have to pay "rent" to the government. I live in a state with the fifth highest property tax. And I live in one of the highest property tax places in the state. I pay more property tax than my friend in California who owns a house worth more than ten times as much as mine. I can rent an apartment for less than what it costs to live in a fully paid for house.

Because I'm in Thailand , I would only ever rent.
But , I own two houses in Australia Victoria ( extremely expensive ) plus a whole lots of listed and unlisted REITs , and other stuff. Thats how I fund my lifestyle with all this , but very difficult to own property in Australia , much better chance in USA , so take advantage of that.
We're extremely fortunate in owning our home (which my husband as an architect designed and had built) plus the ten acre estate it stands in.
We previously owned fifty acres, which over the course of time we've sold off into five individual plots, on which five very bespoked homes, again designed by my husband, has been built.
I rent the apartment I live in. Mainly because it's only for a few years, and prices in this part of Berlin are skyrocketing, so there's no reason to buy anything here. But it's a good spot for Drama Queen to get to her school, boyfriend, etc... I work from home, so I don't care much about commuting, but for her, it's still important.

I rent where I live now but I own a condo downtown. Since I travel a lot, I just get my mortgage paid for me and short lease my apartment when we are away.
"Own" an apartment in Sweden but still have to get permission from housing authority for major changes, can only sub-let for a fee, and pay a housing/maintence fee which will go on for life.
My parents own the house I'm living in. However I have the pleasure to pay all bills and real estate taxes.

I do live in my parents house. Cause here in my country we don't like that parents and sons live separately, but daughters will live with her husband.
I rent. Unlike most people, I've never been interested in owning a house in the past. Although I have become interested in tinyhomes. How about you?
