I grew up in Shizuoka on the mountains with very clear skies and I saw at least a couple as a boy. It was so much faster than I thought it would be. All the times I just saw them alone gazing out over the horizon.
I always saw it as something bittersweet. Like a broken hope. Not quite the same as the wishful and optimistic way I see it depicted sometimes.

Many times. They aren't rare. Go somewhere away from city lights on a moonless night and look up. You'll see one eventually. Some times they are more frequent.
