What's your WORST apartment, condo or home improvement nightmare story? DIY, contractor, neighbor dispute, landscaper, installation, renovation, etc?

Here's mine: I redid my entire basement down to the foundation. When it came time to replace the staircase, the company came and measured. Don't forget we're in a basement! The staircase gets delivered and we are maneuvering it into place after they had left and it's coming up short. We broke out the laser level, the t-square, and the measuring tape and looked over what they had done. They made the staircase too short. We call them back and the next day a different guy, the supervisor, shows up. We go downstairs and we show him that the staircase was cut short. As God as my witness, (don't forget we're in a basement!) He then asks us "Did we lower the floor?". My friend John and I process that for about a nanosecond, we looked at each other and then we looked at him. John got the words out before I did: "WHAT? DID WE LOWER THE FLOOR? ARE YOU STUPID OR SOMETHING? HOW THE FUCK CAN WE LOWER THE FLOOR ASSHOLE? ARE YOU SERIOUS? GET THIS PIECE IF SHIT OUT IF HERE AND DO IT AGAIN THE RIGHT WAY" Supervisor then suggests since the staircase is short why don't we put a platform at the bottom? That's when I lost it. I don't even remember what I said but there were a lot of "Fucks". They brought the correct one later that week on Friday and we asked about what to do with the incorrect stair care and were told to keep it, they don't want it back. OK! No problem! We sliced that piece of shit up and put in the fire pit and relaxed with frosty cold beverages as the weekend began. Best part? The staircase was free!

For three years from 1964-1967, we lived in an apartment into which we couldn't move for a week while building inspectors scraped opium off the walls. (I went to high school with these people's son; the parents owned a Chinese restaurant.) When we moved in, the place was so roach-infested I branded it "the Cockroach Hilton." It eventually caught afire July 19,1966, my mother's 49th birthday, and while the city condemned it to be razed, we had to live there another year before we could move into Windsor's new West Side Projects. Vivid enough, lads and lasses?

@DishLady Nineteen-sixty-five featured lots of songs about roses, one of which was "Millions Of Roses." I mulled writing a parody song about our pest-laden digs called "Millions Of Roaches." Thanks for the sentiment, DishLady.

I got a house and had a guy redo the bathroom floor. When he peeled up the old tile around the toilet there was about a foot radius of rotted wood. I tried getting a carpenter but they were booked for months so I just sawed up the top two layers and set a fitted piece in. Fortunately the bottom layer was treated to prevent water damage, at least..

Back when I was a young apt dweller I had a great apt, but ended up with neighbors who were a constant pain in the ass. They tried getting me tossed out many times for supposid loud noise and music, for constantly have black men visit me, sunning in front yard in bikini which the woman would comment that I was going to go to hell. I outlasted them as husband died and wife moved somewhere else.
