When I was older, our family used to go camping during summer vacation and I could swim across the lake and back.
In my early teens, I learned how to body surf and belly board in the ocean. In my mid-teens I learned how to surf. That was before ankle tethers, so if you lost your board, you had to swim for it.
I took a canoeing course at community college. The prerequisite was to swim to one end of their Olympic size pool and back fully clothed with pants, shirt and shoes.
I thought no problem. But the clothes caused a surprising amount of drag and when I got to the other end I was kind of winded. So, on the way back, I paddled a bit and rolled onto my back to float and slowly make my way to the end.
I was afraid that I had cheated or something, but the coach passed me. What they were looking for was to make sure you knew how not to drown.10 Reply

1 yI 'grew up' in water.
The neighbour I had grew up in has its own swimming pool which you can enter with a key and ID pass.
Generally between the beginning of May and the end of October the swimming pool was accessible from early in the morning, 6:00 I believe, till 22:00.
So if we were not playing Hide & Seek, Football (Soccer), or something else... We'd be in the swimming pool.
Birdseye view of the neighbourhood I grew up in; the street
'Top' Road (centre left) is where I lived; only had to cross the grass field in front of my house, down a road in between the gardens of the houses, and I was at the swimming pool.

1 yWell, I'm small and a little muscular and have a low coefficient of drag (except for my hair).
But on the minus side, I have small hands and feet for paddling.
So yes, I can swim, but probably not well enough to compete, or outpace a shark.11 Reply
Asker1 yEy enough to not drown is what's important lol

1 yI jumped in the deep end of the pool to get to my big brother when I was 11 months and came up swimming. I’ve had to be a strong swimmer bc I’ve bodysurfed all my life. And I can hold my breath a really long time!

have to. This is what I do for fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_1PmR4_R7Q
Asker1 yWaves that big look scary, I've only seen waves up to my chest and those can already toss you around like a salad 😂
- 1 y
That's why I commented on holding my breath. It is frequent to end up in a wave hold down situation when you have to hang on to the bottom of the ocean to get out of it. You hold your. breath or you drown. But that's my sport. Been doing it since I was 9 or 10.
Asker1 ySounds like you've got quite a lot of experience at it, I wonder if you can teach a class, answer the infamous questions like how the hell do you find the board after lol
- 1 y
Well, this is bodysurfing, so there is no board. Instead of a board, you throw your body directly into the wave. And for board surfing, most people wear a surfboard leash that is attached to the board and one of your ankles.
Asker1 yMy life is a lie, i thought bodysurfing was just a fancy way of saying surfing and I didn't know it was attached to them, I always thought they found their board on the shore or something

They used to but now, using leashes keeps other surfers from getting hit by a wild flying board.
Asker1 yOoh that makes sense, that's pretty interesting 🤔

u 1 yI know how to swim, yes... but just the basic, decent swim
let's say good enough to preserve my life... I actually learned how to swim as you described it, was first time by the beach, and the ocean got funny with me, and I almost died drowning, lmao...
found a way to first, find the ground, and then find my way up to the surface and how to stay there as well, lol21 Reply

1 yI'm kind of like a duck in that regard.
I can do it, but for all that paddling I don't make much distance fast, and if I try to carry something or someone I'm gonna sink. So lifeguard duty and swimming races are out, but diving and floating? Sure.10 Reply - 305 opinions shared on Other topic.
1 yI grew up walking distance from the ocean so yeah I learned how to swim at an early age and can swim well.
I remember being a couple of years old and my mother putting me down on the shoreline and waves suddenly hitting me. I think that was the first time I actually had to swim. That's how I learned.
