Funny I didn't see a space to enter any text but here it goes anyway as an update.

The facts. CB radios were never just for truckers and in fact many truckers don't even use them anymore. CB radios are import for communication due to them being antenna to antenna CB radio to CB radio there is no need for a middleman such as required by your phone service or internet service. All that means they will work anywhere any time 24/7 a day or at night and there is never a charge to use one you own it.

Once again I really love these questions that people throughout their this is a good example of that. It's like somebody saying how many know about defibrillators and how important they are it's basically a no duh question. Now this one on the other hand is a double indemnity I would say because we all know that back in the day CB radios had much more importance than they do today because technology changed that however with how technological and electronical if that's even a word you know what I'm saying how everything in this world runs on batteries and electric etc phone lines we are used to that but let's say there was an emergency and we didn't have those capabilities that's where a CB radio would come in handy but I would love to hear your opinion you're making it sound like they're so so important although yes I think they're important especially because of the privacy Factor this was a good question thank you it got me thinking I would love to hear your opinion...

You already explained a little bit of it. Yes there are phones and the like now however those are dependent on a 3rd party to communicate whereas a CB radio is not. I was going to put that in the text however I didn't see the text option just post.

Anyway back to the 3rd party the phone relies on. With a CB radio it communicates antenna to antenna and as long as one can reach another they will always work as long as there is power and you never have to pay for one to use it you bought it it's yours use it any time anywhere.

Another important thing about CB radio is it's freedom of speech meaning no one can shut you off as long as you can reach the other party. CB radios have at their limited 4 watts of power with a base antenna can reach several miles mine easily reaches 11 miles. But there are also CB radios that can reach practically around the world they cost more and technically they are considered HAM radios aka 10, 11, 12 meter radios, but they push a lot more power too.

CB radios are good for all types of meetings and topics too. You can discuss any topics for discussions you want and not be censored. Mine could be Christianity however I hearing more of politics. You can discuss health issues or practically anything you want.

CB radios are also addicting so you know ahead of time. I told my brother in law he should get one a couple or so years ago and he went all off into it. Now he has not just a expensive antenna he's got a tower and he's spent thousands on it. But that's because it's a hobby to him now.

One more word on it. Should you decide to get one make sure you get a mobile type radio not a hand held radio aka walkie talkie because they won't reach very for. And the antenna is the most important part of the package so make sure you get a good antenna such as minimally something like a K30 for auto or a 5/8ths antenna for base, base antenna's and height beat mobile for distance.

I'm just joking but I'm really not if you read one of the questions I just posted I am dealing with the worst thing I ever dealt with in my life and I realize now with our cellular phones there is no privacy absolutely none people are lying to themselves if they think that they are private I don't care what program they have on there or software system I would have to say thank you for this answer I loved it and I would say that CB radios are just about as American as you can get when I think of a CB radio I think of zombieland you know Day of the Dead or some type of military base or even truck drivers but didn't they use things called ham radio is that the same as a CB radio I remember talking to the truckers on ham radio when we didn't have cell phones back in the day my girlfriend and I would get this little book that had all the trucker lingo on it and we would talk on the ham radio to the truck drivers it was a lot of fun. They were some of the coolest people I ever talked to. And I couldn't believe how much code is spoken on those things we had a whole book full of them it was really really awesome there were different channels etc. anyway with what I'm dealing with a CB radio would be a superb thing to have how ironic thank you so much for this Intel now what about Morse code is that too outdated LOL and yes that's what I meant you said it better when you said that a CB radio doesn't need to have a third party that's what I meant by it has its own power source pretty much is what I was trying to say it's not ran by a third party you said it much better thank you

It shall be unlawful for any person except a member of a police department or police force or an official with written authorization from the head of a department which regularly maintains a police radio system authorized or licensed by the Federal Communications Commission, to have in his or her possession, or in an automobile or other vehicle, or to equip or install in or on any automobile or other vehicle, any mobile radio set or apparatus capable of either receiving or transmitting radio or other messages or signals within the wave length or channel now or which may hereafter be allocated by the Federal Communications Commission, or its successor, for the purpose of police radios, or which may in any way intercept or interfere with the transmission of radio messages by any police or other peace officers. It shall be unlawful for any car, automobile, or other vehicle other than one publicly owned and entitled to an official license plate issued by the state issuing a license for the car, to have, or be equipped with the sets or apparatus even though the car is owned by an officer. This section shall not apply to any automobile or vehicle owned or operated by a member of a sheriff's department authorized by the fiscal court to operate a radio communications system that is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission or other federal agency having the authority to license same. Nothing in this section shall preclude a probation and parole officer employed by the Department of Corrections from carrying on his person or in a private vehicle while conducting his official duties an authorized, state-issued portable radio apparatus capable of transmitting or receiving signals.”

So, as you can see, you cannot have a scanner (a mobile radio set, or more accurately, an apparatus capable of receiving radio messages) in a motor vehicle.

Also, note in the first sentence, it specifies “in his or her possession,” therefore, we can assume that would mean on your person or in your home, where you have de facto constructive possession.

The yes and maybe part comes in with scanner apps. The scanner app on your cell phone is NOT an apparatus capable of receiving those transmissions. See, those transmissions are made on specific frequencies authorized by the FCC. Your cell phone operates on other frequencies authorized to cell phones by the FCC. So, it is perfectly legal for your phone to receive transmissions on those frequencies, as they are not meant for public safety.

If, somewhere, someone does have a license or is otherwise skirting the law by installing a scanner, that person is receiving those transmissions. Then, that person retransmits those messages over a legal internet connection that your phone legally receives. Ergo, you are not receiving the police transmission, but the internet transmission.

If the court were to rule the app illegal, they would have to consider the app an apparatus (which is a physical device), or consider the phone the apparatus, in which case all phone capable of installing said app or accessing said transmission would be unlawful (i. e., every phone sold today).

So as you can see I appreciate your love for the CB radio but pretty much everything today is regulated and isn't private and doesn't matter of opinion as to what is better but I see your point I guess it also depends what state you're in this is the law in Kentucky who knows what the law is where you live though LOL thank you I'm going to follow you!

A pleasure gland you like the question and thank you for reading it too. To answer your question, HAM radio requires a license or it's suppose to whereas CB radio's do not. You can go purchase a CB radio and antenna right now and start using it right out of the box no license requires. As far as HAM radio goes those are considered 10, 11, 12 meter radios and they push 100's of watts which is why they require a license they require one but I know some that are running them without one. The standard AM/FM CB radio that I'm using the Uniden78LTXFM running on the stand 4 watts that cost me $138 US along with the 5/8ths antenna that with pole extends around 40ft up, I'm talking minimally 11 miles away though hearing just about every state including the Canada, Mexico, the Islands, Hawaii, too many to recall them all. I don't hear them every day but I do hear them and I hear them clearly they are talking using linear amps or on HAM radios. As far as the lingo goes, I and others have mostly stopped using most of it and I don't really use it at all, not much anyway.

That's why the HAM radio license is required. Those listed are operating on frequencies that don't pertain to CB radios. Those are HAM frequencies that are assigned specifically for their own use and anyone caught talking on those HAM frequencies would probably end up with a still fine if not land themselves in jail. It's also illegal to use a marine radio too those are specifically for boats and require a license to use them too. But CB aka the 11 meter radio, you don't even need to worry about any of that.

You can't run a CB radio without a antenna and if you tried it would burn out the finals in the CB radio, you can't even key one down without it hooked to an antenna it would destroy the radio, never key one down without it hooked to the antenna. In fact I won't even turn mine on when it's not hooked to the antenna as a prevention. Also if you do decide to get a CB never buy a cheap antenna make sure you get a good antenna such as for a auto a K30 or a tram300 minimally and make sure the SWR's are good. If the CB radio comes with a built in SWR meter such as the one I have the Uniden78ltxfm, the manual should explain how to set the SWR's. As far as the SWR's set, you usually don't have to keep a check on them unless there is a problem, however when I have to unhook my radio such as when there is a electrical storm, I always recheck the SWR's after screwing the antenna back on to be safe.

Not to worry I don't pay any attention other than reply plus I thought CB radio would be a good romantic for those interested in lot lizard's anyway. But as far as the Uniden78ltxfm, they don't have a police scanner or any scanner for that matter built into them. So you wouldn't have to worry about that.

From what I see of the videos they are mostly referring to illegal use of radios. And while violators do stand a chance at getting caught is the exact reason I run mine barefoot aka without adding power. I run mine at the legal allowed 4 watts and it does exactly what I need it to do. And not that there aren't violators all of the CB radio pushing illegal power there is that alright however from what I seen on youtube those videos somewhat strikes as scar tactics. Could it be to scar tactics be to deter switching from CB radios possibly keeping as many as possible from turning off the internet and going to CB to gain free speech?

CB radio is a cesspool of anarchy and bad behavior. Thousands of people using illegal amplifiers are trying to talk distance. They blast out local communications to the point no one uses it for local communications. Truck drivers rarely use them either.

You're talking about skip radio which is primarily during the day hours and all that dies down around 7/8 PM my time about the time it starts getting dark. And not all channels have skip all over them. If there is a clear channel you and your party can move to that one during skip. Additionally CB have both upper and lower band or side band channels that and they have recently added a new feature to them which is FM radio. All that aside not if, but when, the communications are cut, you will be thankful you have one even if you feel it's irrelevant now.
