Do you ever not buy something you can afford because doing it would make you feel like a sucker?

So today I called my pharmacy to find out what happened to my order of Dexilant, a stomach medication I have used before for acid reflux with good results. The pharmacy told me that my insurance company refused to cover it, but they would sell me 90 pills for $ 900 out of pocket. I declined, since even though I can easily afford it, buying it would make me feel like a chump and a victim at that price - and it isn't cheaper elsewhere. Instead, I bought the same amount of Omeprazole for 50 bucks - it too will work for me but not as well.

Have you too had an experience like this where you didn't buy something you could afford because doing so would make you feel terrible?

Good news - My insurance company just decided to authorize the drug after all - for awhile anyway.

I feel that way about expensive sunglasses. Anything more than $50 for sunglasses feels like a rip to me.

I have a weird relationship with expensive sunglasses - the more they cost, the faster I break or lose them. I don't buy them anymore for that reason.

I think a lot of people have that relationship with sunglasses. For me the big thing is that there isn't enough of a feature or quality difference between Ray Bans and what I can buy at Walmart to justify paying Ray Ban prices.

What I can get at Walmart is polarized and usually looks half decent.

I've lived in the US and Never paid that kind of price because my Medical Insurance was from a UK insurer.
Have your pharmacist check as there is a generic version of Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) available. In 30 mg and 60 mg delayed-release capsules.

Thanks, but Kapidex and Dexolant are the same drug packaged differently - and same price:

"The primary difference between the two lies in their formulation and pricing. Kapidex is a delayed-release tablet containing 20mg of rabeprazole, while Dexilant comes in both 10mg and 20mg delayed-release capsules"

yes. i like this one yogurt drink but i feel it costs too much. i admired it for about a minute and walked away. i mean, it is imported but i can just go buy a yogurt for a dollar, instead of paying $3 for something that's the same in taste.

I pretty much have. I presently use dexlansoprazole (Dexilant) 60 MG delayed release which works very well at least for now. I had to fight my insurance company and threaten to sue to get them to pay for it. It is VERY expensive in the US, and quite cheap elsewhere, predictably.

Yes, nobody likes to be overcharged. When prices really started to go crazy during covid I used to put stuff back on the shelf every time I went to the supermarket.
