Would you give up your spot on the last lifeboat for others if you couldn't swim?

It's been now 12 years since the Costa Corcordia incident. This is what musician Giuseppe Girolamo did. He was already on the last lifeboat and he gave up his seat to a family with two children, knowing very well he couldn't swim. He drowned.

Honestly, if I couldn't swim and it was the last lifeboat, my last chance to survive, I'm not sure if I would give it up. Drowning is a terrible way to go to. Would you be able to do what he did if you can't swim? I wonder what he was thinking on that last moment. By giving up his seat, he knew he was going to die.

Basically you are asking us if we would be ready to commit suicide by leaving your spot to others, among them, probably the one or the other that CAN swim, right?

The answer is a clear no. Why should I end my life so that someone else that has a remote chance to survive in the water is in a dry place while I drown because of my inability to remain afloat.

It makes me wonder what on earth was that dude thinking. That was his own and only chance to survive and he gives it up... wow.

I mean, you have to put it into context. It is incredibly heroic to save 2 children and perhaps he thought that he could hang on those ropes hanging on the sides of the life rafts. Given the fact that Costa Concordia was barely 300' from shore, the chances of survival hanging on those ropes were relatively high. Problem was the temperature of the water and the fact that it was night time.

the way in which I learned how to swim was indeed... that one time in which I almost died, because I didn't know how to swim... so I'd take my chances again, lol

I've been surfing since childhood and can swim well, but when you are talking a ship at sea there are issues like hypothermia and sharks. I would still give up my place because I do not fear death.
