Do some Americans really think Hawaii is not part of the United States?

There's a guy who posts a video of himself online saying that he is so upset with the 2024 election results, and that he is "leaving the US and moving to Hawaii".

Is he for real? Does he not know that Hawaii is a state, the 50th state, part of the US?

This reminds me of the old stories, which may or may not be myths. On flights from California to Hawaii, the flight attendants would walk around the cabin and ask if anyone needed to exchange US dollars for Hawaiian money.

I know I said I wouldn't post political questions, and, though this is related, it really has nothing to do with politics. It's about ignorance.

Apparently Democrats do, which is wild considering Hawaii votes Democrat. I can't act surprised though, a Democrat on this site was calling Trump xenophobic just a couple weeks ago because a comedian referred to Puerto Rico as a floating pile of garbage. I had to inform him that Puerto Ricans are citizens of the United States, not foreigners and it wasn't even Trump that told the joke. He doubled down saying it was silly to act like Puerto Rican culture is the same as Americas as he tried to convenience me they are totally different people. Democrats are crazy as hell. Being from Florida the USA's third largest state, I have been around Puerto Ricans my entire life. They share in the same culture south and central Floridians do being part of the greater "Island region" of the USA.

There was this White guy we hung out with in high school, he was a hardcore Hawaiian separatist and he was genuinely convinced that Hawaii is still a kingdom because the US acquired it in an illegal manner😂. He said he's getting a Hawaiian passport and said they have representation in the UN and he's gonna be speaking on their behalf. I'm very curious what he thought of Obama's presidency then😂

I have never been there but it does sometimes seem like Hawaii is not part of the US. This is not the same with Alaska.
