Is the United States really "United" States?

Each states feels like different countries to me with different laws, different government, different political views and etc.

It was never meant to be that way, the founding fathers intended the US to be more like the the UN.

Each state would have its own policies and laws but would yield to the federal government for very specific things. States rights and all, supremacy clause for anything spelled out by the federal government to override states but if it isn't spelled out then states get the say on it.

The reason behind it is, because local government is better suited to handle local issues. People hundreds or thousands of miles are often clueless. We can still relate to this today.

Throughout history every time a country ends up with a large central government it, eventually ends up a dictatorship.

States themselves could also nullify federal laws, it is still happening to this day. Many states ignoring weed and legalizing it on the state level even though it is illegal federally.

It isn't really meant to be united. It is meant to be focused on each state having power within its own borders, while a tiny miniscule amount of things should be handled at the federal level, like national defense.

Sadly the feds have grown out of control since the civil war and loves to step on states rights.

It is and isn't. Democracy can't exist in a place with no disagreement and by that standard the US is the hotbed of democracy. However, that heat has becom toxic and radioactive due to some people figuring out how to exploit disagreement by keeping people from even wanting to talk to each other. Both sides do this but I personally suspect the right is the only side doing it on purpose.

Empires run a natural course. "The Right" is not to blame for this. It's a simple matter of demography and debt.

A third of a billion people with no common heritage, no common values, and no common faith. Of course they have no common destiny.

If everybody was actually on the same page, there wouldn't be much need for states themselves, would there? Despite their differences though, they really aren't as radically different as you might think, certainly not like travelling to another country.

There is an old TV show from the 50s and 60s called Route 66. It is about 2 guys that travel around the country in a Corvette. It really illustrates how different people were in different parts of the country. This was before McDonalds and cable TV and shopping malls. It was a less homogenous country back then During the 70s and 80s Americans had a more common life experience and we had a lot more in common. . Now it seems like the country more divided than it was 20 years ago.

The USA is a Federated Republic that is SUPPOSED to respect State's Rights.
