"The jig is up"?

Can I use the phrase "The jig is up" in a Rap that I'm writing in a "slang" kinda way like "They up the jig"? does it fly in terms of Rap slang or is it too much disfigurement of the sentence even for a Rap slang?

The jig is up means the charade is over, the lie failed, you can stop pretending now.

They up the jig, because of the way its arranged, sounds like it means they get caught up in the charade, they escalate the lie, they are preoccupied with pretending.

Be careful when changing an idiom/phrase that you don't change the meaning on accident. Changing it on purpose can work well, but if it's accidental it probably won't work as you intended.

Oh so you're saying that instead of it meaning they got caught in a lie it means they started an on going lie which is still in process?

Yes. It sounds like "up the stakes" or "up the power" because up us used as a verb instead of an adjective like in the original phrase (up describing jig). If that's what you want it to mean, it works.

Well as much as I appreciate your response.. you couldn't be more wrong about this cuz you're looking at it all wrong.. it's not about the type of music it's about the content and the way it's written it doesn't matter if you sing it or rap it the content is what's important and I believe in rap music the content is what matters most since it's mostly what it's all about while in regular songs you can put less effort in the writing since to most people the melody plays a big roll as well so it's actually the exact opposite cuz to write good raps is a lot harder than to simply write a regular song and it takes a lot more effort and skill to write well this way.. also while there are rappers who rap about shit which I hate just as much as you do.. there are also rappers who rap about real stuff and important relatable stuff that actually help people.. maybe you just haven't listened to the right rappers yet.. I hope you'll give it a chance with real writers then you might see it in a different way cuz when rap is written well it can be true art I promise you:)

@Asker As someone who both is a composer and a writer, I can verify that composing musical scores actually takes way more work than writing does. Also pretty much all rap is people going on about stupid gang/criminal/broken relationship shit. Its basically just country music but with less instruments and an angry tone instead of depressed one.

Its bad, and honestly isn't even music in most cases, just rythmic complaining.

The best music has no words in it at all and has impressively done compositions of instrument use.
