Have you ever shopped at the goodwill? Did you find it to be better or worse than regular stores?

I love a good will. Most things at regular stores are overpriced. I went to a regular store seen a jacket for $50 liked it but was like wait let's see if I can find something even cheaper. Went to the Goodwill instead and got two jackets each for $7.50 totaled $15 and good shape. One an athletic brand the other don't know.

Okay, I'm getting schooled here. I thought goodwill and thrift store was the same. What's the difference?

I can't even count the number of times I've shopped at thrift stores. I also used to go to a large number of garage sales.

With thrift stores you just have to keep looking. Every now and then you'll find a super good deal. You have pretty good odds for clothes, or least shirts if not pants. Thrift stores are good for heavy winter shirts. I have no idea where some of those are originally bought from because I NEVER see heavy shirts like that at retail stores. Not even outdoor specialty stores sell those heavy shirts.

I always look at music CDs, books, and maybe games (both video and board games).

I've seen some really good deals on kitchen ware, dishes, etc. You have to keep looking to find a full set that's not cracked, but they show up every now and then. All of my wine glasses and cocktail glasses came from thrift stores. Some of them are pretty good quality.

For tools, garage sales is the way to go

I used to shop occasionally at Goodwill. Things like books (some dog eared but still in great shape), CDs, and other things that caught my eye, even some furniture. Not recently though. And I learned that the employees go through and get the best things for themselves.

Salvation Army is more into getting things that are often given to needy people. But have not seen that organization recently. Don't know where any of them are now.

Goodwill can be a bit hit or miss... I like hunting for special gems of clothing but Goodwill seems to have less cool clothes than most thrift stores that cater to clothing.

Does not seem that way... some thrift stores specialize in clothing. In fact i would not be surprised they get a lot of the good stuff from Goodwill lol

They do. The difference i would say is most thrift stores I go to are much smaller than Goodwill. Goodwill is a huge organization.

Just better stuff. One store actually goes to womens clothing stores for donations... and theaters for old costumes. They have amazing clothing there. Goodwill just gets junk mostly.

I donate a lot. At least 2x a month. I’ve never shopped there. I’ve looked around before though.

There is a user, @SaraSmithishere , who used to be here a lot until August 2022. She made money doing this. She'd shop at places like good will for old stuff and then turn around, maybe fix them up, and sell them at a significant profit. This was a side income she had with her mother.

I lost a button on my blazer and could not find a replacement. To buy a complete new set of matching buttons would cost more than $20. A friend suggest I go to Goodwill. There, I bought a blazer with a complete set of nice buttons for $5, took the buttons off it and had them sewn onto my blazer. My old partial set of buttons was sewn on the Goodwill blazer and donated back to Goodwill.

Not at goodwill because they don't exist in the UK but charity shops absolutely
I've probably spent (and made) a couple of thousand in them between clothes, media, books, furniture, electronics, cookware, copper, brass, silver and gold

Yeah there isn’t anything wrong with shopping at thrift stores. Some people feel they’re too good for that though

Yes however here it's the equivalent to Salvation Army / St Vincent de Paul and similar charitable shops - Australia 🦘🌏

I found a nice kitchen set for my summer house. I have donated stuff to Goodwill as well. There is a Goodwill place right in my town.

Yes but only in Florida are they worth shopping at, the ones in New York are not worth it, mostly garbage

When we had one it was a hit or missed. Stop going there once I found out how they’re wages. I don’t even take used toys or clothes their.
