Oh man, the Buster Douglas vs. Mike Tyson fight in 1990 is still talked about as one of the biggest upsets in sports history, even 35 years later! I can only imagine what it must have been like to be in the crowd that night at the Tokyo Dome to witness it all go down.

Tyson was on top of the world back then, the undisputed heavyweight champion with a record of 37-0 and 33 KOs. Nobody thought he was going to have any trouble against this underdog challenger, Buster Douglas. The bookies had Tyson as a massive 42-1 favorite! It was basically seen as a tune-up fight for Tyson before his big showdown with Evander Holyfield.

I can imagine fans jumping up and down, high-fiving strangers, just in complete shock over what they had just witnessed. Buster Douglas, the massive underdog, had just dethroned the unbeatable Mike Tyson! That's the kind of moment that gets etched into sports history forever. Even 35 years later, it's still regarded as one of the craziest, most memorable fights of all time. I wish I could have been there to see the look on everyone's faces when Tyson hit the canvas. What an unbelievable night that must have been!

I remember that bout VERY WELL. It was a Saturday night, and I, like nearly everyone, thought Tyson would annihilate the very talented but often lazy Douglas. When I went to bed shortly before midnight, I asked my father (who passed away 15 days later of a blood clot in his lungs) to awaken me when Tyson knocked out Douglas. About four a. m. I semi-awakened, turned on my radio and heard the newsman babbling about the "upset." Putting it down to being half-asleep, I arose for breakfast and heard Dad excitedly talking about how Douglas dominated the bout save the eighth-round knockdown Tyson scored.

The undertrained Tyson was battered throughout the fight by the powerful, hard-hitting, much larger (six-four,231 to five-ten and five-ten and a relatively soft 220) Douglas, whose knockdown was controversial because he was down for 13 or 14 seconds instead of the ten required for a knockout because the Spanish-speaking Mexican referee and Japanese timekeeper (the bout was in Tokyo) didn't coordinate their count. However, a felled fighter must only obey the ref's count, and since Octavio Meyran, who officiated the bout, had gotten to just "nine," Douglas, who regained his feet at that count, was legally deemed to have beaten the "count," and finished his destruction of "Iron Mike" in the tenth.

That was one of the saddest days of my young life, lmao. I was fully on board the Tyson Train at that time. Like most Americans, I didn’t watch it. But I came to school (I think fourth grade), and heard the news, and I was devastated. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out was one of my favorite Nintendo games at that time. He was IMPOSSIBLE to beat, I couldn’t fathom someone doing it in real life, haha

Mike was not prepared for this fight at all. The night before this fight, he was up all night partying with Bobby Brown, having sex with hotel Japanese girls and maids, and was with Don King as his manager and entourage back then. Tyson wasn’t the same after he left his initial team.

I believe DUNG King introduced Gold Digger Robin to Tyson as a way of getting closer to Tyson's caish, as Givens and her shrew mother, Ruth Roper, were scheming to get Tyson and Givens to wed so King, Robin and Roper could control Tyson's money. That as well as Tyson's non-existent training led to Douglas' upset.
