It’s a metaphor that’s all about taking the good with the bad because the bad is inevitable.

I was on the basketball team and I hated that there were these two annoying assholes who played with us
But I did love the game

So my dad told me that line to get to me to accept that there will always be two annoying assholes no matter what I do in life and it’s not a reason not to do things

I can’t even remember who the guy was who said it, or if it was even directly meant towards working out, but back when I was 20 or 21, I was struggling with commitment to lifting weights when I didn’t have a high school football coach making me do it. In a conversation with some mystery guy, someone I probably remember but have disassociated credit for saying it, told me ā€œIf you do something 21 days in a row, you can pretty much call it a habit.ā€

So I applied that to working out. I had a home weight set I bought but didn’t use enough. I was young and poor, so gym membership fees scared me (no Planet Fitness for $5/month yet😝) as a monthly commitment, especially if it were to end up being wasted money.

I resolved to work out not for 21 days in a row, because you really can’t, but that I would work out every other day for a month. At the end of the month, I’d see where I was at, and consider committing to a gym. And that’s what happened, I joined a gym, and minus some injury timeouts, I’ve been working out consistently for about 25 years now. It’s been good for my health, I feel like it contributed to success with women in my single days, and it’s the reason I was and still am able to compete at a decent level in adult athletics, formerly semipro (American) football, and now rec league ice hockey.

Honorable mention to this older guy named Peter who I worked with in a produce department at a supermarket when I was 19. He was a grizzled old grocery store veteran, counting the last few years til he could retire. I think he used to be some kind of department manager, but he was in cruise control in his final working years, and took a backroom job where he basically assembled fruit/vegetable platters, cut large/hard to access fruit like various melons, pineapple, etc, so they could be sold in halves or cut up in chunks. He did all the prep work for that. And the manager was slightly younger than him, and didn’t give him a hard time. He came in, did his work, maybe a little grumbling or occasionally singing (which was hilarious because he had a real gravelly voice😂), punched out, and went home.

And I’ll never forget what he’d repeatedly say when things got a little hectic, often just for someone nearby him: ā€œEight and skate.ā€ Meaning do your eight hours, and then get the hell out of there and don’t think about it again til you come back. Basically, ā€œit’s just a job, don’t take it home with you.ā€ I remember that all the time, still, especially in his gruff voice😝

Two from the same person. First, if you possess the money, the other party is vulnerable. If they possess the money, you are vulnerable.

There are three types of people. The first is truthful and says, "I'm going to get your chips" and proceeds to take. The second is the con man who states, "I would never take your chips, that is not right, you can trust me." And, all the time he is scheming to take your chips. The third is a good guy. He means well and states, "I will not take your chips," Nevertheless, he rationalizes and takes your chips.

Invest at a young age...30, 40 years for it to grow. Contribute to your investments every month, put some also into savings, have a budget.

Surround yourself with wise people. If you hang out with fools you'll all get dragged down together.

Only date women of high character. If she is risking pregnancy, disease, a spiritual connection with some player from the bar she just met then she can never be wife material.

Always trust actions. Words mean nothing.

Have discipline. That is the way to success. If you wait around to "feel" motivated then you are setting yourself up for failure.

My dad, he always told me, "You'll never have regrets or feel you failed at anything, if you know you tried your hardest". It's true! I've failed at a few things in life but never felt I failed, because I know it wasn't from lack of effort.

To start my retirement plan as soon as you're eligible and always try to allocate 15% of your pretax income to it.

I would still recommend people consider a ROTH IRA over that. But I was not privy to that information when I began. But being told that has transformed my retirement over the past 25 years. I now make more in my retirement plan each year than I make at my 9 to 5 job. I'm not really sure if that means I've done really good in my retirement planning. Or my job pays me terribly. I think both.😆

When looking at a source of information such as a book or website have a look at something in it you have a good knowledge of. It'll let you judge whether they know what their talking about and how well they explain things.

It's very useful these days since so much is written by unqualified people using AI

Don't listen to anyone. Follow your own path. Every moment in your life when you fail, others can say "I told you so." And the worst part of it is, they're right... for now. All it takes is one moment to change your life and change peoples perception of you for good.

If you can do it while the baby is awake, then don’t do it while they sleep. If you can’t do it while they’re awake, do it while they sleep. But prioritise your own rest while your baby naps, don’t spend that time rushing around cleaning up.
