What do you do when coffee stops working?

Coffee is just not working anymore, its basically just a tasty beverage at this point, it's like I'm drinking sugar water.

Well, remember, coffee can only do so much. It's a mild stimulant. That's it. It's not and never has been able to be a heavy "wake you up."

Your wake-sleep cycle is what you have to depend on to get you going in the morning.

If you don't get enough sleep, or are sleeping odd hours or napping too much during the day, then your cycle is going to be off. No amount of coffee solves this.

You also have to GET ENOUGH SLEEP. That's a big fat period. If you're burning the candle at both ends, as they say, again, no amount of a mild stimulant is going to wake you up if you're physically and mentally tired.

The usual "enough" sleep amounts are between 6 to 8 hours a night. Erring on the higher side is better.

And it's important that you get enough sunlight exposure daily. That means about 15 to 30 minutes helps set your sleep cycle. Also, getting exercise, about 30 minutes of walking is enough every other day. But daily exercise is a plus. Nothing extreme is necessary.

In addition, a reasonable diet that supports good digestion are part of the picture. Eating late in the evening and eating heavy foods disrupts sleep. Heavy alcohol consumption also disrupts sleep. Moderation with food and drink.

You have a balanced life, you'll be able to sleep soundly and wake up ready to go without relying on a morning stimulant. I think you're out of balance on one or more fronts. Good luck.

Your body usually gets used to levels of stimulants and they work less well if you overdo them.

Try backing off and working out a regular sleeping plan with good exercise added in, and healthy food. Figure out how many cups of coffee is. your usual number.

Recommendations are no more than 5 cups a day. And don't forget to count any drinks that have caffeine in them. No Monster, Coke... Those all count too. Some of those heavy caffeine drinks have 60 to 100 millligrams of caffeine in them. WAY too much.

I bet you're overdosing on coffee and other caffeineated drinks and don't realize it. And don't drink any caffeine after 2 pm. Will also affect your sleep cycle because it has to be eliminated from your system. Plenty of water. Aim for that gallon a day and if you're active outdoors, running or biking or such, drink more. Will also flush the caffeine out...

Keep a little journal of your food, drink for the next two weeks and see what you're loading up on. You may be imbibing stuff you're not aware of.

It's going to take time to figure it all out. I had to cut back on coffee at a former job and figured out I was drinking 6-8 cups a day because I was bored and because everyone around me were coffeholics. I was sweating like a pig and jittery... Removed coffee overdose and became a person again.

Keep working on what you need to add or subtract and you'll figure it 0ut...
