A major role.

But I'm no mystic, by destiny I mean how existing in this world is mainly the result of a lot of gambling, by events and nature, setting us on a somewhat predictable path. Extreme cases are so many, such as kids born in countries at war, incestuous families, genetic abnormalities, lethal accidents and such. In that sense, how to seriously tell these people that life is made of choices?

I don't even need extreme cases, as society and upbringing set us on a path in life that is partially predictable. Social class imposes its views on us, whether or not we're aware, religion around us imposes its worldviews on us, education and upbringing we receive turns us into certain people with certain personalities etc.

I can't use this to say that any choice we make in life are illusory, I just want to point out at this predictability of one's trajectory in life, that we could easily ignore. Especially ignored in individualistic cultures that tend to teach its members that their existence is entirely in their hands. An illusion easily debunked given how much our decisions (when we decide) are influenced in every directions, by everything and everyone, around and upon us, from birth to death.

I believe that what I am is what this world did and does to me, first and foremost.

I am also what I do, yes, but that should come second, in my understanding of this world.

I get what you're saying, and it’s true... so much of life is shaped by things beyond our control. Where we’re born, how we’re raised, and even the society around us play huge roles in who we become. But at the same time, don’t you think choices still hold weight? Even within the paths we’re set on, there are moments where we can decide to push against the current or go with it. It isn't only a willful thought. It does wonders when you truly mean it. I remember an incident of a woman under prophet Musa's AS Ummah. She wasn't supposed to bear children. She kept praying for it. She asked Musa AS to ask اللہ. He got an answer that she isn't mean to have kids but later conceived one. Musa AS asked اللہ how could she have it. اللہ said that he changed her destiny because of her duas.

@Manuelwe just to be clear, it was actually my decision to move on. My ex and I had different expectations in the relationship. I felt like I was putting in more effort than I was receiving, and it became too hard to balance my emotions. After some time, I decided to step away because I wanted something that felt more balanced. It's not that I wasn’t hurt by it, but I needed to focus on myself. Now, he’s reaching out, but it’s up to me whether or not I want to revisit that chapter. It’s not about revenge or holding on to the past—it’s just about what’s best for me moving forward. Destiny works over complicated phenomenon what nobody can control and none should control. But the major portion of our lives we make ourselves as per our choices.

If we will think beforehand plan ahead about all the possible outcomes. Then we can weaken the destiny involvement in our lives. Then it will be all only and only our choices.

If I think about it, then I'm sure destiny doesn't play a role. Look at the awful, unfair lot some people have in life (especially if you think globally).

Nobody's destiny is to struggle in crippling poverty their whole lives. Its nobody's destiny to starve to death during childhood.

Sometimes when things seem to make sense in my life... I will trick myself momentarily into thinking its some form of "destiny."

I think that's simply people's tendency to think they're the center of the world (as they experience it). It's only possible to believe in destiny's role in daily life, if you are only thinking about your own life.

We are all the main character of our own story. I think this is responsible for some people attributing the events in their lives to destiny.

Yes, I end up believing in a mix of free will with some fate sprinkled in now and then. I do think that the fate part is me thinking I'm the center of the story. There are people who have such limited opportunities; and such unjustly cruel challenges. I cannot reconcile it with anyone's "fate."

I am also agnostic. So I don't believe in many of the faiths which take the idea of fate or divine-plans into their calculations. That might have an affect on how a person sees this.

I agree that how we navigate life (choices) makes a difference. That's partly why I don't believe in fate. I do think what you do matters. So I can't see how an aggregate of people, all each navigating life individually and making individual choices... can be fate.

To me randomness seems to be the opposite of fate. I can't reconcile those two things in my mind. I'm not saying you're wrong. Not at all. Just that I have trouble seeing it that way.

I am going to say this. I saw two muslim twins. One plays by the quran. the other plays by the western quran.
The western quran allows you not to wear all that head gear or long dress.
Like my muslim ex girlfriend would remove her head scarf and even bath infront of me. Though under quran it is wrong. I am a catholics and we have similar rules.

Hope is also linked to Motivation, which is a requirement for Hope to work. Motivation is an external Force, without External Motivation the person will get Demotivate and become Hopeless..

Globally this is the Difference Between a Civilian and Soldier.
Civilians operate on Hope and Motivation.

When the correct Force should be an Internal Force. If a person relies on an Internal force, Instead of an external force applied from someone.. that Internal force is Consistent and will generate a huge momentum and make that person unstoppable.

That Internal force is Discipline.
That is why A Soldier relies on Discipline. And Not on Motivation.

that’s an interesting way to look at it nd also I agree that discipline is a powerful force nd keeps a person steady even when motivtion fades... But I think hope still plays a role... it’s what gives people the will to develop discipline in the first place. Even soldiers start with a reason to fight before they develop their discipline, right? Maybe the real strength is in balancing both: having hope but also cultivating discipline so we don’t depend only on external motivation...

However these 2 mechanism cannot exist in 1 person. That is why these mechanisms were divided. Into Raja & Sena or King & Soldier.

Soldiers initial start with hope and build Discipline out of it, and then they use Discipline. Discipline indeed needs to be developed. As were are all born babies who are born with hope, and zero Discipline. But a soldier does not always have people around him to motivate, hence Discipline is Vital to him.

Kings Operated on Hope, because although Hope is Emotion Based, and needs External force like motivation. King always has Subjects around him to motivate. And Since Hope is Emotion based, It is capable of Developing a Vision of Future. Which Discipline cannot since it takes Randomness into consideration and sees the Oblivion of eventual Destruction of that vision whether it's City of Troy or Constantinople.
