What do you think about site requests to turn off your adblocker?

You know, those websites that immediately want you to turn off your ad blocker, and either won't let you see their content unless you do, or let you see it but shame you, like saying "so you won't support us?" or the like. These things really piss me off...

I do NOT like turning off my adblocker, and if I really want to see the site content for some reason, I will go to great lengths to avoid turning it off, including using TOR if necessary.

Fuck ads.

Many people here seemed to be using the Brave browser, so I downloaded and installed it, and tried to transfer my sites and password from Chrome - and could not. The only instructions as to how to do it referenced things that do not exist in my copy of Brave which is the latest version.

So I uninstalled Brave, and I am back to Chrome, Firefox, and Tor. I am not about to try to manually transfer all that stuff because the damn browser cannot transfer it like every other one can.

The thing is, I understand advertisements keep the site holder’s business afloat.

Though, it is also my knowledge that filling every single inch of your webpage with advertisements and pop up ads, completely makes the site unreadable, unwatchable, and the experience is hindered as a whole.

My compromise : Visit the webpage without ad blockers then turn your ad blocker on the second time you search it, that way they make a profit and you get the information you wanted. If this was a ‘silent contract’, where they didn’t stop you from going to the page you wanted to see then that would be fine though totally stopping customers from seeing the page is totally unfair when you have every corner ruined with ads also pop ups.

Small side tangent: Now when you watch a small YouTube channel’s work for just 5 minutes, you’ll get 4 ads in total. Wtf is happening here?

It's a very questionable move you're doing, because you trust ads to be innocuous by default. By default, they are not lol

I’m not a fan of them either. It would be one thing if the ads didn’t make the websites almost unusable, but that’s exactly what happens.

the pages serve you free content because they earn from ads you watch... why should they put money into serving you content and get nothing from it?

If a developer chooses to force ads on me then their approach is automatically not worthy of interest to me, separate from content quality

most people don't want to pay a subscription or even one time fee for content access, so ads are the only common ground to let creators earn and other people have access to their creations

people put their time and hearts into creating stuff, it's obvious they want to have something for themselves from it

Hahaha YES I would make it free because this is already what I'm doing!

I'm producing free content since 20 years, in the form of text, pictures, designs, videos, graphics lol. Because I believe in what's free, as in free of charge and as in freedom. I'm putting my heart into creating stuff, and I receive something for myself, I receive pleasure. A lot of pleasure!

I don't have to, it's true, I want to, and I'm doing it while blocking ads, it's how I want it to be. On a bigger scale, we could say that I rely on other people not blocking ads, because if everyone were blocking them, the internet landscape would be much different. Many for profit sites would die, and, philosophically speaking, I wouldn't miss them lol

I wouldn't miss them because that's how internet started in the late 90's, before megacorps take over, before Google ads business model. I'm really interested in looking at this scenario again, where internet belonged to individuals, not companies

It's more complicated and more interesting, I don't deny content creator their share by hiding ads, because it doesn't affect their share, what affects their share is amount of views and amount of subscribers. I'm still a viewer and still a subscriber, you see what I mean

Nope it isn't simple, because it depends on each platform's business model and revenue distribution. Instagram and TikTok for instance, rely a lot on sponsored content. That is not blocked by ad blockers

My point here is that, considering the success of ad blockers among users, platforms find ways to circumvent money loss. They adapt.

but I usually go with a site that has a very strong and built-in Adblocker, so most sites will not detect it as it would instantly detect a plug-in or extension that blocks ads... so I don't really see as much of these pesky things

DuckDuckgo... and their ducky player, not only will block the ads but also all the annoying extras and I can just watch THE VIDEO that I want to watch, lol

Oh I can certainly understand why Apple never took the initiative, they have some business partners to protect. Exactly like Google's Android, Chrome and Chromium, since they recently barred access to one famous adblocker, making a lot of people switch back to Firefox, mobile and desktop.

I'm setting my adblocker to circumvent those nagging scripts. When, for some reason, it doesn't work, I leave the site immediately and find a replacement. No time for these web developer games lol.
