What REALLY got people upset and ultimately ended the Styrofoam containers was the McDLT. It came in a Styrofoam container about 2.5 times as wide, with half of the burger on each side. The ads touted that the container "keeps the cool side cool and the hot side hot" and you were supposed to put it together just before you eat it for maximum freshness. The tree huggers lost their minds and a year later McDonald's was using cardboard containers.

I remember styrofoam, and all the complaints when they switched to cardboard.

The styrofoam containers did keep the contents warm longer than the cardboard ones do.
