Is acting basically just lying?

no. because lying means betrayal, not merely pretending or stating false facts. it's exactly like if i tell you that i'm gonna say something that's not true and then say something that is not true. did i lie to you? no. cause you were informed of the statement not being true. actors don't betray you, genuinely trying to make you believe they are a different person. their job description tells you they are not being who they are so you're not being lied to.

Not necessarily, lying can be as a fib as well for example i can say I wear a hat all day when I don't, not betrayal but not true either lol

yeah but saying something that isn't true isn't a lie if there's no intend to betray. it's like when you're telling an annekdote or a hypothetical. it's not the truth but you're not lying. you're trying to make a point by example.

Im not sure thats how lying works, that's how betrayal works but people can lie even for the stupidest reasons, even if the reason is stupid I don't believe that being unhonest is my less of a lie cause the intentions weren't the worst

yes that's how lying works. as i said. if you say something that's untrue, it's not a lie by default. it becomes a lie once you're trying to make someone believe it's the truth. that's what betrayal is.

actually the intention is part of the definition xD "a statement or action made with the intention to deceive or mislead someone" so you could even lie by stating true facts if your intend is to decieve or mislead someone.

I'm sure it's rare but I bet some are pretending more IRL than when acting.
Perhaps they took a role so they can be how they actually want to be seen. At least I wish that was the case when they get to play a really good character and hope IRL they're alike.

Not exactly because their acting is disclosed to the audience. Lying is more of being deceptive with the intention of deceiving the people who you’re talking to.

Pretending is a better word since everyone who watch actors know they are acting and are in on it. A lie is concealed truth.
