It’s not entirely accurate because we live in a society. Laws and other people’s social boundaries are factors. There are always consequences. Therefore we are never truly free.
That sentiment is about breaking out of your own chains though. We take fewer chances the more we have to lose. So throwing everything and everyone away helps you to realize the ways in which you are holding yourself back. Only after you are comfortable with having nothing to lose can you realize your true potential.


The poem “Our Deepest Fear” by Marianne Williamson similarly explores that concept. Our deepest fear, she proposes, is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. That’s scary because in the end we can only blame ourselves for our untapped potential. It’s easier to settle for mediocrity when there’s someone or something else to blame for holding us back.

I see the sentiment, but freedom isn’t always contingent on loss.

Loss can strip away constraints, obligations, and fears, creating space for reinvention.

Yet, true freedom also exists in choice, mindset, and self awareness even when we still have much to protect.

The statement captures a dramatic truth about liberation through letting go, but it’s not the only path to autonomy or personal power.
