I don't really care so long as they don't accuse me of anything, they don't say anything annoying, or get in my way. That said, I'm there to shop, so they should want me to have the best experience possible so that I have the opportunity to spend as much money as possible, return at a later date, and promote their store by word of mouth. If they are being annoying, I might not buy anything, I might not return, and I might spread negative publicity about them. At the end of the day, it's their business and they can fail however they would like to... It's not my responsibility to keep them in business.

A better more professional approach would probably be to assist and cater to potential customers. Then you can keep an eye on them, while appearing to help them in every way possible. Then you can make sure they are not stealing while treating them like a king. They will probably tell all their friends that place is awesome, the staff will bend over backward to make you happy, you should check it out... If they are a thief, they will probably leave to avoid all the extra attention.
