I would end up playing with kid to stop the tantrum. There parent would start a tantrum instead because they can't comfort their kid as well as a stranger can... I've done it before... not on a 12 hour flight but at an event I was really trying to watch. It really killed the parent when there kid started their tantrum back begging for me instead of them, when they fussed at me to leave there kid alone. Tantrum are almost always a cry for attention. The solution is only as complicated as the problem...

Children are direct reflection of their parents a lot of the time. Im sorry for your rough flight if you are in this situation. Just breath you can do this! The kid can't ☹️
