If you had a child how would you respond to them if they were throwing a tantrum in public?

I’ve been taught how to diffuse temper tantrums… It’s not always going to be effective because every child is different, but the most important thing to do is to prepare beforehand is to try to avoid situations that might trigger a tantrum or meltdown.


there's a few things I would do, that could diffuse/prevent a tantrum.

• Bringing toys as a distraction.
• Turn the situation into a mini job for them.
• Staying calm and trying to listen to my child.
• Change the situation/leave it.

- Children are fairly easy to distract. When a child is having a tantrum, all their thoughts are focused on the tantrum and what caused the tantrum, not much else. By providing a distraction such as sensory toys or activities, the children will divert their attention to that, and self sooth.


- We all know that children dread going some places, like the doctors, or to the store. It can be intimidating for them or frustrating, which can cause a tantrum. I learned this trick while babysitting. When we had to go to the store and I took a child with me, I always turned it into a fun “scavenger hunt” where I told them to try and help find me XYZ. This definitely prevented them from being worn out/frustrated about going to the store.


- No child likes to be invalidated, yelled at, or ignored when their emotions are controlling them, that’s only going to make it worse. By remaining calm, getting down to their physical level (squat or sit down), and talking in a soft spoken voice that is validating their emotions and asking what’s going on, that helps them diffuse.


- If a child is throwing a tantrum in a public area, there’s going to be a reason why, it’s probably the situation… If you decide to leave the situation, or change the scenery, it can help them calm down because the reason why they threw a tantrum, was because of that.

Take them out of the situation, go to the car/home, and have a serious talk about what's motivating the tantrum.

Help them understand what they're feeling, why they're feeling it, and what is a more effective and productive way of dealing with those emotions other than throwing a fit.

My daughter never wild out in public or anywhere and when we did go food shopping I used to the run in the cart then jump on it and glided down isles with her in the cart she loved it lol now she is a teenager she always been good and a brat sometimes but kids will be kids!

Pull them aside and tell them to stop showing out or they will not be able to play with their toys when they get home nor will they get candy or dessert. In the car ride home, we’d have a much longer talk and I’d educate them on how to behave in public (not that I’m that great in public myself lmao). Now if this wasn't my kid, I’d actually bribe them with candy to get them to be quiet. Thats always worked 😂

The object is to be very consistent with them. Educate them as to what works and what doesn't. Never reward inappropriate behavior. If at all possible, leave the situation where the tantrum is occurring, diverting the focus on something other than that which the child wants.

I have kids and what I do when my toddler is having a tantrum in public is quickly explaining why he can’t have/do whatever it is he’s upset about and tell him to stop or we need to leave. When he doesn’t stop I grab him and we leave.

Remove them from public immediately. People don't deserve to be in public if they don't know how to act. I don't care how old they are. This is a very important principle that you need to teach them from a young age.

They always say to walk away but go to a short distance so you can see them, other people take things away from their kids
