Can frequently yelling at your child and insulting them be abusive?

My father is a believer that only hitting is abuse and claimed he never abused me. However, he would yelled too much. It was scary.

He would get upset at trivial things and yelled and at times it would proceed with calling me stupid, idiot, etc. That sounded humiliating. Even though he never laid a hand on me, was that still abusive?

There were times he was in a better mood and be back to be the funny person but if he was moody, he would be a yeller and sometimes hurled out insults.

I believe that's abuse. But I also believe some kids deserve to be abused. It's a very unpopular and not politically correct opinion.

Point in case to a son of mine. He is a piece of shit. People thought I was a piece of shit until...

Until they dealt with him. I shit you not, I've had teachers asking me to beat the shit out of him. Both grandparents on the Mom's side have switched from thinking I was a bad Dad to just blaming him after a good babysitting session. They're not together and divorced, so it's two separate people that don't talk.

Yes I believe so. It undermines the children. Doesn't develop their own confidence. I remember my parents argued a lot and I can see that it left me with a lot of anxiety to work through.

Of course, these things all exist at levels of gradation since none of us has had perfect childhoods. But generally yes, that sounds pretty bad.

Yeah. It's very easy for many people to want kids but not many can actually do a good job at parenting. Just because they provided food and education towards their children doesn't mean everything if they have no patience as parents.

the sad part is that type of abuse is undetected since there is no physical evidence. But dad's words were so hurting when he was upset. He was ok when he was in a good mood, back to being the funny person. Then back to yelling again if he was stressed out or had a bad day.
I don't think he knew how to parent. He was happy with marrying my mother and having me as his first child but he had no patience.

Thank you. Honestly, to me this felt as if I had been slapped. It was as if he crushed my soul. During my school years I would feel insecure about myself so many times, thinking I was useless.
I think he didn't know how to be a parent. My father is like those people that wants kids and marriage but have no patience for children when it's not just forming a family but actually doing a good job at raising the child, putting all your dedication and effort.

It took me a while to realize my father was being abusive. I believe there are many cases like mine, where they're abused and even though it's not physical, it's still soul crushing.
