Is it normal for parents to be verbally abusive?

My parents are verbally abusive. They call me names that no one has ever called me. Basically curse words A through Z, and hurtful things like "I can't wait until I get my new daughter. I don't want you anymore."
I hear other people saying "My parents hit me with a switch" or something bad, and that their parents cuss them out.
On the other hand, whenever I'm at my cousins house and her or her siblings does something wrong they only get yelled at. Which I would rather be yelled at than called unnecessary names and get told unnecessary things.

Am I overreacting? Is this a normal parent thing?

To be THAT abusive? NO!! That is not a normal parent thing to do. Yelling at a kid? Yes, especially if the kid did something wrong. But going as far as wanting a new daughter? That's crossing the line. I'm very sorry you seem to have crappy parents. Did you do something really bad to make them say that?

I agree. I was in 3rd grade at the time. I don't remember. I couldn't have done anything too bad because I never was a bad child.

No, it's not normal and its abusive. I'm so sorry you have to go through that. I hope you don't believe what they say when they're abusive. My parents yelled at me, I've yelled at my own kids but I never experienced verbal abuse from them nor do I do this with my own kids.

Been through this my whole life. I just started retailiating back. I bring it right back them. If my dad gets in my face I get right back in his face. It's actually working too.

I used to remain silent and listen. Then I started fighting back, but now I find that it's better to just ignore them. There's no fuel for them if I ignore them.

Well, my relationship with my parents got much better now and we really get along well. But in the past I got called names just because they had a bad day and need to release their anger.

First I was like "oh, it's whatever", but to have your own parents say such awful things to you... it hurts, it really hurts :/

After the freakout (and when they've come to their senses), I'd let them know that it's not right, or I'd write it down and give it to them and then they start to realize that they did wrong

I tried telling them that, but days later they'd do it again. I talked to a school counselor and my mom found out and was mad. There's nothing to do, but deal with it until I'm able to move out.

When I screwed over, I'd get yelled at. And when I did awesome and they wanted to congratulate me, I declined and make them feel worse about themselves. "Yes I could do it, but hurting me on the daily with those swear words did not help out"
