Ever instantly hated a teacher on the very first day?

So for me this was kind of an odd situation. It was back in 6th grade of middle school. It was my history class. The "real" teacher for the class only came in for literally the FIRST TWO days of the whole school year because she got really sick unexpectedly. She never showed up for the whole rest of the year. Next time I saw her (walking around the school not as one of my teachers) was in either 7th grade or 8th grade of middle school where she was walking around in crutches.

Either way, my 6th grade history class was really strange in that it didn't really have a permanent/real teacher throughout the whole year. It just rotated between about 10 or so substitute teachers who would fill in for a certain amount of time. Like a month each or something like that.

But either way, this guy, Mr. Steve. With the system I described thankfully he didn't stay for long. But his presence was definitely a very unpleasant one.

So he walks in the class on his first day looking rather angry, grabs a piece of chalk, angrily writes his name on chalkboard, and says everything in a grumpy tone:

"Hellooooo class my name is misTURR STEEEEEEVUUUUUH. There are gonna be some rule changes around here. Like for one, the work you do in class, if you're not finished you don't get to take it home, you have to turn it in TO ME okay? You got that? TO ME! TO ME! TO ME! Otherwise you get a zero no exceptions BLAH BLAH BLAH GO CRY ABOUT IT!"

And the way I wrote that is pretty much exactly how he spoke.

Motherfucker couldn't have introduced himself in a worse way. His teaching style after that reflected that too. He didn't really teach you anything he just expected you to know things with no explanation. He also never explained why an answer was wrong he just simply scolded you for it. And most of the time he just made us do a bunch of reading without even teaching us.

I'm just glad he didn't stay for long.

Me, and everyone else in my entire grade level. I have never been good at math so it was absolutely baffling to me how I tested into honors math in elementary school. Being in honors math meant, you had harder classes, more course work, and more testing. So I already wasn't looking forward to it. Then came the evil legend of Dr. H who in my opinion, should have actually gone to jail.

Get into the class, and we have metal seats, but he has the air intentionally cranked to super cold to the point where we are shivering. He then explains, there is no talking in my class unless I talk to you first or you are asking a question with a hand raised. Don't do you homework, that's an automatic detention. Get caught talking, automatic detention. Class starts, I'm low key terrified because it is dead silent. He works some problems on the board, and the ones great at math, raise their hand, but his method of teaching was to call anyone without a raised hand to the board in front of everyone to make you do the problem and then he would humiliate you if you didn't understand it or get it right. One of my friends dropped a pencil in class, and he yelled at her.

From that day forward it made me sick to my stomach going to his class. I hated it, and it 100% soured any hope I would ever have in life of liking math because the entire year was just brutal and being humiliated for trying to learn something, was the worst bit for me. But, it didn't end there. His actual son attended class, and he was the most harsh with him. He was brutal with him when he wasn't getting things right to the point of yelling at him. One day, while yelling at him, he approached him and picked him up while he was still in his desk and threw him a few feet. It was so scary. We were kids, no one knew what to do, but he was just yelling and yelling. No one came to help, nothing. I never saw any bruises on his son, so I can't say that if he was physically abused at home, but I'm almost certain he was.

Years later, online on Facebook, I was looking up my old school, and came across an I hate Dr. H Facebook page. Literally it was students after former student who had all written about that horrible man and what he'd done to them because I think he was there another 15 years, after I left, at least. It was wild to know so many people hated him that they created an actual hate page.

Oh my God you are a fucking excellent writer! With the way you explained everything I felt like I was in that same class with you with the cold ass freezing temperature, Dr. H explaining all his insanely unreasonable rules, him humiliating the kids, him humiliating your friend for dropping a pencil, you feeling nauseous because of how much you hate his class, him basically abusing his own son, Dr. H yelling and yelling, etc.

Reading all that low-key scared me. I felt like I was actually THERE with you. Not sure what you currently do and I know that at age "36-45" you've probably already found your life job but you should take up writing anyway. You're really good at creating an atmosphere!

And WOW. An "I hate Dr. H" Facebook page? I kind of wanna see it not gonna lie, lol. But yeah. While the concept of a hate page on Facebook for a teacher is funny Dr. H definitely does deserve it. The idea of a hate page is funny but the trauma those kids had suffered back then is not.

Suddenly Mr. Steve (the teacher I described in my post) seems like a saint. Like Mr. Steve was grumpy and had a sort of "I fucking hate my life, I fucking hate my job, I don't give a shit about these kids, I'm doing it just for the money" attitude but he didn't do even half the things Dr. H did.

Mr. Steve was just a really boring teacher. Dr. H was a straight up psycho. Wouldn't be surprised if he killed someone at any point of his life.

I don't hate anyone but I will say most teachers really aren't that smart. Most are very brainwashed. Being the smartest person in my school and in my college, with an IQ in the 160's, I actually ended up teaching my teachers, professors, and other students a lot of things.

An IQ in the ONE HUNDRED SIXTIES? Wow! Assuming you're telling the truth that's fucking awesome. Almost like being a real life superhero where your extreme intelligence is your superpower. No wonder you ended up teaching your teachers and professors instead of vice versa!

Unfortunately though I've also read that people with such a high IQ are rather lonely and unhappy because it's hard for them to find people they can relate to. Not sure if that's true or not. I hope it isn't for your mental health's sake.

Our 7th grade American History teacher was a very imposing guy to start with. (Sorry about the dangling preposition). Anyway, the first day, he strides into the classroom carrying a bulging briefcase, gives the door a quick slam, walks up to the (mandatory) teacher's chair next to the desk, abruptly states, "Everything you have heard about me is absolutely true", and drops the briefcase on the chair with a resounding "thunk", as if it were an extra special, brick-filled exclamation point!! He never had a discipline problem in his class. And any "hate" quickly turned to "like" when it finally dawned on our little punkin heads that he was really helping us. Got a perfect score on my Constitution Exam (required to pass).

The highschool director, actually. Came into all classes the first day of school (11th grade) to welcome us. I absolutely hate fake smiles and she was carrying that grimace around like the Joker. I’m so glad I never got her as a teacher. Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter depicted her perfectly, I got PTSD from watching that movie. 😵‍💫🫣

Okay, your description of her is hilarious. 😂👍 I just got a REALLY detailed mental image of her. She does genuinely sound like she was insufferable though funny detailed mental images aside. Glad she was never your teacher though. 😌🙏 And yeah. The Joker and Dolores Umbridge definitely fit that description as well. 😅

Maybe once or twice, I don't recall. I know of one teacher that hated me. I don't recall what he taught but I was in the 2nd grade.

I feel you... kind of. I'm lucky looking back that most of my teachers were not THAT bad. Most just really average, a few really good, a few really bad. Lucky the few really bad ones didn't stay with me long.

School was traumatizing to me for OTHER reasons though. Mainly due to my classmates and the bullying I suffered from them. I also HATED the school work because I was so stupid and couldn't keep up with anything. Even in special ed I just wasn't keepin' up.
