Would you rather live in a big multi-floored home, or a smaller apartment or a smaller house?

I know somebody who has a house that is big on the outside, but on the inside, the upper floor is hollow in the centre except for a few side hallways and close hallway area bedrooms that line the outskirts of the top floor, which are used for sleeping and home work space, as well as guest rooms for visiting friends.

I believe the ones who designed or built the house could afford a totally sheltered second floor, but they realized having multiple fully saturated floors would mean the residents would have a higher work load cleaning the house, so the second floor is mostly just a decorative device used to accentuate a hallowed out roof area, rather than a dwelling region where there is extra space to go about and hold on to possessions in the home throughout the entirety of the second floor surface area or potential middle second floor surface area.
