Do you step on bugs?

Question

All my life, I reacted to bugs the same way, which is to squash them at the first sight of them. I've only ever let bees go but if they land on me, I don't think, I just squash.

I've had girls when I was young literally cry over me killing an ant, and I'm like "it's a bug, not a dog". Only 1 student agreed that killing an ant doesn't matter.

I have a girlfriend and she got angry with me when I told her of this. She gave the old adage of "pick it up", i am not touching a bug and putting it outside just ensures that they come back in with friends, the next day, making the infestation 10 times worse in hours instead of stepping on it now and calling it a day.

Am I the a-hole?

I don't go out of my way to kill insects. They are pretty cool little life forms who all play a role in the overall ecosystem. But I also don't dwell on it too much if I accidentally step on one either.

But like you I have a special fondness for honey bees, bumble bees, praying mantis, ladybugs, cicadas, butterflies, the hummingbird moth, etc.

It depends on where it is that I might encounter bugs as to whether or not I squash them.

When I encounter them in the house, I squash 'em.

When outside, I leave 'em be, unless they're interfering with whatever I might be doing, then I squash 'em.

You’re not automatically an a-hole for stepping on bugs, but you’re kinda missing the relationship part here.

She’s showing empathy; you’re showing efficiency. Total values clash.

Compromise: kill dangerous pests, spare harmless ones when she’s around. That’s not “simping,” that’s emotional intelligence, and trust me, that’s way sexier than bug-stomping bravado.

i do and encourage people keep bug numbers down. spray at home. outdoors notice bugs and kill them.

No I don't step on bugs. The only time I'd kill one is if I was out where there r many biting bugs bitin me 2 make them stop. Or spray bug killr if I had plants 2 defend.

Depends on what kind of bug, some of them are pests, poisonous, or they carry some kind of disease.
