When I was a kid, I stole one of those erasers that you put at the tip of a pencil from the corner store. My heart was beating like crazy because I knew I did something that was inappropriate.

By some mysterious coincidence, my father got wind of it and made me write an apology letter to the owner of the store. He came with me and while he waited in front of the store, I was obliged to go into the store and deliver the apology letter to the owner while waiting for his reaction.

I could have died of shame and once the shop owner read my apology letter, he had a tear in his eye but gave me a sermon about my dishonest behavior. Nevertheless, he told me I could keep the eraser...

That was my most shameful behavior and something I am not proud of.

Your story reminds me of being caught by a store clerk, stuffing my pockets with penny candy, at the local Ben Franklin 5 and dime back in the 60s when I was a kid.

The shame I felt was horrible.

The lesson was learned.

@nolabels I believe I was so traumatised by the fact that I had to write that apology letter and hand it in personally that I thought I would not live to see the end of that day and that I would die on the spot
