Have We Become Too Good at Explaining Ourselves?

We have so many ways to explain human behavior now. Trauma, attachment styles, triggers, boundaries, burnout, emotional regulation, insecurity.

A lot of these concepts are genuinely useful.
They can help people understand themselves and finally put words to things they couldn't explain before.

But, I wonder what happens when understanding ourselves becomes easier than changing ourselves.

We can know exactly why we struggle with trust, why we shut down when we're hurt, or why we become defensive. And yes, those things may have a reason.

But, does knowing the reason automatically make the behavior okay?

If our wounds explain why we hurt someone, does that explanation change the impact our behavior had on them?

At some point, “this is why I became this way” has to meet “this is what I'm going to do about it.”

Our past can explain us without having to permanently define us.

So, when does understanding where our behavior comes from become the beginning of accountability rather than the end of the conversation?

Otherwise, self awareness can become surprisingly comfortable. We understand ourselves perfectly and somehow never change.
