Asleep at 1-2 AM and up between 6 and 6:30 AM. No alarm. No wake up period. Out of bed and functional when my feet hit the floor.
Why such little sleep?
It's the way I've always been. Genetic. 2 genes have an anomaly, I can't recall the nomenclature off the top of my head. They do a couple of things. It may take you 1-2 hours to reach REM sleep. It takes me 10 min. My metabolism is faster. So they tell me, my body can take care of all that sleep maintenance stuff in that 4 hours. It also affects my liver. I can metabolize caffeine, sugar, and alcohol much faster than most people. I can have a cup of coffee before bed and it doesn't affect me at all. I guess it's true, I've been like this for my entire adult life. People tell me I can be exhausting to be around because I never wind down.
Understandable
The Key Genes Involved
CYP1A2 Gene: This gene makes a liver enzyme that clears about 95% of the caffeine you consume. If you are a fast metabolizer (often an AA genotype), your body processes and clears caffeine very quickly, which reduces its stimulant punch.
ADORA2A Gene: This second gene codes for adenosine receptors in your brain. Caffeine works by blocking these receptors to stop you from feeling sleepy. Variants in ADORA2A change how sensitive your brain is to that blockage, influencing whether caffeine causes jitters, anxiety, or sleep disruption.
Natural Short Sleep
People who naturally function well on 4 to 5 hours of sleep often carry rare, distinct genetic traits (such as mutations in genes like DEC2 or ADRB1) tied to the sleep-wake cycle itself, allowing the body to produce more efficient, restorative sleep in a shorter window.
Your lack of a sweet tooth is actually a highly distinct biological trait, and science suggests it is likely rooted in your genetics rather than just a personal preference.
The Effect: People with certain variations are incredibly sensitive to sweetness.
Genes like FTO (often called the "fat mass and obesity-associated" gene) and MC4R regulate appetite, satiety, and food preferences.
Certain variants in these genes significantly reduce the neurological "urge" to keep eating highly palatable, sugary foods.
Your brain likely hits its satisfaction threshold exceptionally fast, turning off the desire after one or two bites.
How It Connects to Your 4โ5 Hours of Sleep
This is where your biology gets truly unique. For the vast majority of people, short sleep brutally spikes sugar cravings.
Because you lack this craving despite short sleep, it strongly reinforces the idea that you are a true, natural short sleeper. You have a highly efficient metabolic baseline.
I use my alarm on my phone You sweet sweet boy. You 💗
Setup Alarm
Wake up before alarm even rings
off days, wake up on my own.
Work days...2- 3 alarm lol
Usually naturally but if I have to be up by a specific time for an appointment I usually set my phone alarm just to be safe.
If I have to wake up to go to work or get somewhere on time then I always set an alarm. In my days off I sleep until I feel like getting up
I set the alarm when I need to, but I'm usually awake before it goes off.
I set an alarm but almost always awaken before it goes off.
