I think Henry Winkler known as the Fonz in "Happy Days" invented winking, and it takes his name.

The wink, using it as a deliberate hint, joke or secret signal was first recorded in English in 1100.

Winking also appears in ancient texts. Greek and Roman art, and early literature as a form of non verbal communication.

So the guy that first winked could have been Greek or Italian.
