I think it’s a bit of both. Some aspects of our personality are probably inborn—our basic temperament, what we like, how sensitive or curious we are, and how we naturally respond to certain situations.

But a lot of what we become is shaped by our experiences. Family, friends, relationships, failures, successes, and even difficult moments can change how we think and act. Sometimes we develop certain traits because we learned that they would help us deal with life.

What I find interesting is that the “built” version of us isn’t necessarily false. And yet, it’s still really us because we chose, consciously or unconsciously, what to take from those experiences.

So I don’t think that you can draw a clear line between the personality we were born with and the personality we developed. We are born with a certain set of qualities, and life just builds on that. Ultimately, both the natural part and the learned part are us.
