Whoever is currently around them the most would call and ask them and make conclusions based off their tone of voice when talking about the person,. any hesitation, stuttering, what they don't say

I have people who do that. Plausible deniability and all. I believe the usual method is to isolate the person and hook them up to a polygraph. A cross section of all those people is best. If you can locate his drug dealer, that can be useful too.
