Here are four possible solutions:
1. jail - the only word without the letter E
2. open - the only word without two consecutive vowels or consonants
3. essence - all the other words start with the same pronunciation as their first letter
4. teacup - the only word with 3 different vowels

So if I'm playing this right then my answer is essence. Because all the other words allude to having holes or openings.

Beehives have holes. A hole can be deep. Getting put in the hole is another term for going to jail. Open obviously implies some type of space like a door, portal, or hole. And a teacup also has a kind of hole, an open space to be filled.
