To get to the other side, was this joke always supposed to be a literal response or was it always a way to say the other side as in die and going to the other side as in going to the afterlife cause now the joke makes more sense.

I never understood that the chicken went on the other side of the road to get killed but only because she wanted to cross the road, perhaps because there was better food on the other side, because her chicks were on the other side of the road or because the rooster called her to have a look at something (we all know what, right?).

As the saying goes, "the grass is always greener on the other side". This is particularly true in the case of the chicken. She saw juicy grass and seeds on that other side and that is why she crossed.
