Perhaps it's bad timing or something, but last week a fellow everyone knows to be very blunt and rough around the edges calls me up out of the blue after three years.
It coincides with the seasonal return of a certain little chippy -- who somehow has a pile of married guys doing her bidding wherever she goes. (Three years ago she tried to force a connection between me and this guy, but I did him a small favor and moved on. He's a creepy old married guy... just her type.)
She and one of our other mutual connections recently turned up like a splinter in my *** to cause trouble for me and I ignored them.
Now this fellow shows up and asks if he can do me a favor. He basically offers me the moon. WHY?
I didn't even need half a second to think "No way in hell." I immediately suggest an alternative for him to work with.
He protests that no, he wants to help me out specifically. (Seriously? WHY?)
I'm cheerful and thank him, then diplomatically explain that he will get more ROI out of working with the other place (bigger visibility, high-level crowd, and physically much closer to him). It makes more sense for him.
He's hesitant but grudgingly accepts my boundary. I tell him to reach out to the other person the same day since it's a slow day for everyone. He complains that it's his bday... he wanted to work with me... and says a few things that are just not connecting. There's no clear reason for his call or sudden urge to back me. Clearly these other two morons sent him.
I set up a group chat, introduce him to the person I recommended, and leave it at that.
The other person in the group chat reached out to him right away... and got no answer at all.
It's been a week. If the guy just wanted to work with someone I handed him a stellar opportunity.
I'm normally a fairly trusting person, but to me this has red flags ALL OVER it... and if *I* can see the red flag it's probably visible from Pluto...
