Guys. Can you differentiate between beautiful vs pretty?

It's hard for me to understand what guys might find beautiful vs pretty in a girl. Can you explain what makes you think a girl is pretty vs beautiful and vice versa?

Also, can you give some examples to support your point?

In the personal ranking of girls that are attractive it goes from Face to Body, I will explain:

FACE : Nice -> Cute -> Pretty -> Beautiful -> Gorgeous -> Stunningly Beautiful/Perfect Combination <- Real hot <- That ass <- Fit <- Shrimp : BODY

Basically the more the left the more emphasis is on her face, the more to the right, the more emphasis is made on the body. So you could get lost in the eyes of a girl from the left, and wouldn't be able to recognise a girl from the right side if you don't see her from behind.

I do understand that it is a messed up maybe almost childish way of classifying and objectifying women, but we did it between friends to understand each others' stories or signs when pointing at a girl.

Question of the day: Can anyone explain the "SHRIMP", that was added by a filipino friend and folded me in half the first time I heard the explanation.

Of course the meaning of each words can be subjective to the person described and the person using it. So some people may disagree with me.

Those terms are synonymous in my book.

However, there is a distinction between beautiful/pretty and sexy/skanky.

Ignore the words, for its just semantics . The point is a girl can be two types of attractive.

1. Generally beautiful, also clean cut and classy, presents her self in a positive fashion, makes me want to date her. link

2. Attractive, but in a more sexual way. Most likely is showing a lot of skin, and portrays a sexual persona. She's fun to look at and have sex with, but nothing more. link

Girls don't seem to realize us men have these two categories. So they ask question in confusion about why these slutty girls are getting all this attention in bars, or vice verse, why they are getting all this attention but can't find a good boyfriend.

Getting male attention is not all one in the same. You must make sure you illicit that right kind of attention depending on your goals.

True, but I'm simply trying to prove a point. The line in the sand between slut and attractive can be hard to spot, but at the same time, its not hard to know when someone is far from the line, on either side, as your comment proves. Oddly enough, while to you and me that picture seems to portray an obvious distinction, You'd be surprised how many women would dress that way thinking its exactly what us men want. Or at least come close to dressing that way.

Not everyone can be pretty but most can be.

Pretty is someone who looks good but you can 'tell' they put much thought into their style of clothing, makeup, hair and so on which is what makes them look nice! :]! (most average looking people can do that)..

In contrast, beautiful are those who despite looking like they just woke up look attractive, as in without any effort.

its going to be different for every guy but it has to do with how done up a girl is and the way she presents herself.

Well a pretty girl to me is one that is relaxed has a nice smile and has a nice face. A pretty girl is someone you would date for a long time or marry they are the best in my opinion because they are mostly modest and toned down. On the other hand a beautiful girl is one that has those outstanding sexual qualities that 99% of guys will drule or at least stare at. I'm trying not to be offensive or gross but, simply sexy or beautiful girls have a big butt or large or that perfect medium breasts. These type of things and maybe their hair and the way they dress can make it easy for guys to differentiate girls. A good example of a pretty girl would be Mila Kunis or Selena Gomez, although a sexy or beautiful girl would look more like Nicki Minaj or Megan Fox. I hope I helped you! I've always wondered myself and actually looked up this question to see answers :D

I told the woman I loved once that she's pretty when she came dressed up for a party and she replied "pretty ... so I'm not beautiful" and that statement rings in my head since then but never came up actively for thought TILL you asked and I went over 4 - 5 answers here and THEN it struck me and which is possibly this:

1. Pretty is an overall look i.e. cute or beautiful face, dressed up properly, hair done up etc etc - the overall look

2. Beautiful is the woman / girl by herself

1.1. For one to be pretty they have to be clothed and done up

2.1. For one to be beautiful they need nothing, neither clothes (dressed up) or make up - it's natural

A beautiful woman can be pretty but a pretty woman is not necessarily beautiful ;)

maybe a dumb way to explain it, also English is not really my best language, but I'd say that I would say a puppy is pretty, but not beautiful, but then, I could say the sky is beautiful, still I think beautiful is deeper, like pretty is kind of factual, while beautiful, if I understand correctly has kind of a "Wow" factor, like pretty is a semipermanent feature, "roses are pretty", while you may think of beautiful kind of like in the scene of Harry Potter that turned Emma Watson in a beauty icon, like, she looked pretty since the 3rd movie but then you saw her with the nice hair and the dress in all her glory and then even girls were like "ohhhhhhhh so beautiful", now I'm not saying that "beautiful" is always sudden and only at times, I'm just saying that "pretty" is more "meh" like "yes, she is pretty, no way to deny it, but that's it", and "beautiful" is more like sustained feature.

For starters, its relative to the person you're asking. Some guys like qualities other guys won't like.

Now purely from a looks perspective, beautiful > pretty. Beauty tends to have a grace or ellegance along side very good looks and tends to regard the whole body. Whereas pretty tends to only consider the face. Ie: a fat person can be pretty but not beautiful. (At least that's my view)

On top of that, personality can come into play. For example, it can make someone you would consider beautiful, at least to you.

The two words are very similar, but the word "beautiful" tends to mean "pretty, but in a more serious, deep, or profound way", while "pretty" means "attractive" but doesn't necessarily have any deeper meaning to the guy. To me the difference is about how I feel about her as much as she looks.

Beautiful implies that physically she conforms to the accepted standards of beauty in our society - but I may not be interested in her.

Even a plain girl can be pretty. Pretty implies I am attracted to her on a more personal level.

I think women understand what makes them beautiful, but often not what makes them really attractive...

Me personally, I think a girl is pretty when see looks nice and presents herself well with some touches of makeup, nice dress style etc. But I find some who can look good, pretty, attractive, and beautiful naturally without makeup and stuff to be most beautiful. I like the natural look. But in general beautiful means that she is not average and has an unforgetable image.

Pretty means the girl tries, she invests in things to polish herself with, shoes to accentuate her legs, I sometimes perceive it as manufactured deception; something that is easily reproduced. pretty and beautiful are the same thing.. though I can differentiate cute and pretty. It's still pretty subjective but with a cute girl you'll never get bored looking at her while for pretty girls they might stun you for the first few times and the effect will wear off eventually.
