Why do (some) women wear pants/trousers in hot weather?

Question

My wife insists on wearing a skirt to work in hot weather. One of her reasons is that "all women" do so. However, according to my observations (in the street during the day on weekdays), at least 75% of adult females are still wearing pants even though the weather is hot.

My question is, if you're a woman who works in an office and you wear pants to work even in hot weather, why do you do it?

Skirts are cooler. Pants get reallyyyy hot. I wear them in the summer whenever possible. Actually I like wearing dresses as often as possible, simply because they look nicer. I feel more feminine. If I look good, I feel good, and I have a better day...so I like looking nice.

Girls pants are tighter than guy pants, so they are much hotter than guys might think. I wear pants in the summer for four reasons:

- The air conditioning in the building where I work is typically freezing

- I did a bad job shaving my legs that morning, or I'm on my period and don't want either of those things to have a chance of being apparent to anyone but me

- All of my other dresses and skirts are in the wash

- If I'm working with dangerous stuff in the lab and am required to cover all skin

Skirts are comfortable. If you pick skirts/dresses that fit your body and make a habit of being ladylike (crossing ankles when sitting and taking small steps up stairs and such), then there is not a problem with skirts.

I wear the least amount of clothes that I can. When it's hot out I can't function. I've actually been wearing a short skirt around my house because it's f***ing hot and we don't have air conditioning. However, if I didn't have to walk to work and my office was nice and cool, I'd probably only wear skirts as often as I normally did in milder weather. Once I get a real job I'll probably wear pants (assuming those two things are true) just because I'm more of a pants person. No fear of flashing people.

bc they aret at work to show off their body. men don't ear shorts to work. pants are what people wear to work, unless they are trying to draw attention to their sexuality.

People are comfortable in the type of clothes they are used to. If you've always been wearing pants it takes a bit of bravery to start showing your legs at work. Also you may not own suitable skirts or dresses for the office. I'm the other way round. I have never found work pants that fit me properly so even on the stormiest days I wear skirts and dresses, I just choose tighter ones or a long coat to stop the wind from catching them. Also good weather is rare in the UK so some people aren't as liberal about wearing skimpy clothing. They know their legs are pasty white or that the good weather makes the guys more likely to perv.

As far as work is concerned, I think it's mainly about what's considered 'work appropriate' for the particular job.

I'm on unemployment right now, so this isn't an issue for me. But I'm looking for work and in doing so, typically wear pants or a knee-length skirt. Otherwise I wear jeans most of the time. I don't have very many pairs of shorts. I do have a lot of shorter skirts, but still often stick with jeans because I have sensitive skin and can't shave as often as I'd like to.

I don't understand why you think it's a bad idea to wear skirts in public though, lol. I agree with your wife on that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing a skirt in public. Wearing a mini-skirt to work is, in my opinion, a bad idea because it's not workplace appropriate.

I think women continue to wear pants in the hot weather out of habit. It's like asking why people still wear jeans in the summer. They're a wardrobe staple.

Also, not wanting to shave may play a part in wearing pants.

Gives us the power suit look - women in a men's world. Well, at least for me, in my corporate surrounding, it looks good. I live in a tropical country but the air conditioning in my office is way too cold for my comfort. I like wearing skirts too but the style and length depends on where I'm at. I'd wear a short skirt for a casual look but a a proper length in solid color for work.

I don't know how to answer without sounding mean, so please do not take it that way. I just wear a skirt or pants when I feel like it. Pants I can move about how I please. In a skirt I'm limited, if I drop something I have to pick it up in a way my ass won't show. Your wife just prefers skirts, not a reflection for other women.

I prefer skirts in the summer too. It's much cooler for me. (bare legged, not hose/stockings) Even long ones are cooler than slacks/pants Shorts are great too, but usually aren't something to be wearing to work. Some women just aren't comfortable with their legs being seen or have jobs that require movement that isn't suited to skirts.

I can't wear long trousers in hot weather. I just die from the heat, get mega sweaty and feel drained and gross.

I wear 3/4 length trousers, shorts, skirts, dresses... anything other than full-length trousers.

I'm the exception though, I'm usually uncomfortable over 22-23°C

all my friends wear jeans throughout summer. Beats me how they bear it.

I do it because

A ) I'm too lazy to shave or I have bites on my legs

B ) I can't find any shorts/capris that look OK on me

nonetheless, its hot as f*** outside, +30 degrees celsius, and regardless of the above I'm going outside with shorts or a skirt.

Guess it depends on how you feel that day. I mean I may only wear jeans in hot weather if I know I'm going to be in and out of cool places and short distances a lot throughout the day. Or evening nightime I don't care how hot it is I refuse to get bitten by mosquitoes so I'll wear jeans. If I know I'm gonna be outside durning the day not in a more airconditioned space, shorts or skirt it is shorts or skirt it will be.

I know both sides.  I have some friends who chose to wear dresses/skirts as soon as the weather gets warm  because they don't like how their bodies look in pants.  Maybe this is a reason for your wife, and she doesn't want you to know about her insecurity? I wear pants year round because I have horrible cellulite and spider veins.

maybe they are insecure about how their legs look or just don't want to shave.  or maybe they are not sure if a skirt is work appropriate.  also when wearing certain skirts women have to worry about bending a certain way or sitting a certain way so that they don't expose too much.

Some girls don't feel comfortable wearing clothing that is shorter or exposes more flesh.

Some girls are insecure.

Another reason could be is that maybe the girl is on her menstrual cycle and feels more comfortable being covered.

Another reason could be maybe that's just what she feels like wearing on that day.

Another could be maybe the girl hasn't waxed or shaved and she wants to cover it up until she does.

The question is, why wouldn't I do it? Just because your wife wears a skirt to work, doesn't mean we all should. Sometimes I feel like wearing pants, other skirts, sometimes I just can't be bothered with stockings and heels.

Also, if you're living in UK, how really hot is hot weather there? If you're not breaking a sweat, it hardly makes any difference between one and the other. Pants are easier, imo, if you don't have to iron them.

I am overweight my thihgs are chunky, I would not be caught dead in a skirt outside, sure I am working on losing weight but if I had the toned legs I would wear a skirt with shorts under it, also, I take the buses and trains, I would not be caught dead in a skirt on the bus, as if I do not get men trying to hit on me while I'm on the bus

felt forced to wear pants there. no one wore skirts or dresses. ever. one day when I wore one to school for some event (extra credit) everyone stared and pointed at me.

I work in a lab where pants are required, but women who work in an office may wear pants if they feel it is more appropriate for their work environment.

Its cold here in the office I work. I only wear a skirt out socially not at work. It gets the wrong kind of attention at work. But the minute I get home, I'm in shorts, a skirt or a dress when this hot outside.

wear pants because they're practical, when we're not shaved, avoid guys starring at our beautiful legs...

I love wearing skirts but they're not very practical , and it's hard to find comfortable skirts for work.

For myself, I work on a ranch, which mean jeans are a requirement. Through he years I have adapted to wearing jeans in the heat and it doesn't bother me.  Most people just wear what they are comfortable about wearing, it also depends where they work or the tasks they will be taking on that day at work

I wear pants to work because sometimes I have to do things that aren't easy to do in a skirt.  For instance, take photographs where I need to squat or lay on the ground.
