Why are speedos bad/frowned upon?

I don't get it. Girls can wear bikini's that are the equivalent of walking around in panties and a bra, or wear yoga pants out in public places, but a guy wearing a speedo is a violation?

As for the "but bikini's are thicker" argument, well, speedos are also thicker than briefs too.

I understand that a really overweight guy wouldn't look very appealing half naked poolside, but neither do really overweight women who show their skin at the pool, either.

Why is it this way?

Unfortunately, here in the USA it's a puritanical double standard by those who like to make men ashamed of their bodies...like if I'm not supposed to notice that a woman wearing a bikini has cameltoe and breasts...and that's provided that she has the body for a bikini which is questionable for a lot of American women frolicking on the beach.

I'm not overweight nor do I have a protruding gut so I wear a swim brief to the beach (or pool) whether you like my body or not. They're more comfortable for swimming than board shorts and more sexy too. And, I like the fact that it exhibits my package...simple.

In many places in Europe they are required, because board shorts are considered a health hazard because of what's often in the pockets,a nd the fact people wear them around all day before getting in the pool.

They're out of fashion in the US because of Puritanism, plain and simple, and hypocritical Puritanism at that. Girls are encouraged to wear almost nothing in the pool, but if a guy shows off his body, well, that's somehow bad..1!

No idea. I have no issue with it. My boyfriend is a swimmer so he wears nothing but speedos.

However, it could be the whole guys are all homophobes thing...if you wear scant amount of clothing (i.e., you must be a homo and Lord knows how guys are all afraid of being called gay).

When I was growing up in the 80s EVERY guy wore Speedos - anything else was ridiculed! These days guys are more wimpy and insecure. I blame the rise of Surf culture and internet p*rn as well as good old fashioned homophobia...

I have a lot of speedos and wear them in private with my fiancé (female, I’m straight). Have worn them on occasion in public, but often chicken out and wear board shorts over the top.

i think they should be destigmatized for straight men, they look great and are more comfortable, dry faster and just generally better. The contempt for the male body is so extreme in the US
