Well it depends on the guy, some guys are honest to god true about it, and some guys do it to sucker you into bed. Just depends on your guy. You want an honest opinion about your guy, let some of your best, non jealous (meaning they are not into him so would they would be unbiased about their opinion about him) friends give you an opinion on what they think of him (your smart, and relationship stable friends only!). Give them enough to evaluate, and if, by what they see, that he might be a player, take whatever deep thing he says with a grain of salt and watch out for 'advances'. Also check up on some of his friends and find out as subtly as possible, what kind of a person he is. For his sake I hope to hell he means it. Douchebags who use those lines give good guys who use em also a bad name.
